Victoria Beckham’s pain: ‘I need a daughter-in-law I can trust’

There weren’t just two people in son Romeo’s relationship

When you date a Beckham, the rest of the family comes as a package deal. And no one feels more invested than matriarch Victoria Beckham.

Last week, Victoria and David’s son Romeo, 21, revealed that he and his childhood sweetheart Mia Regan, also 21, had sadly parted ways. But while Romeo and model Mia seemed to be taking the break-up extremely well, both posting loving tributes to each other and simply saying that, after five years together, they’d “friendzoned” each other, we’re told Victoria hasn’t taken the news quite so positively.

According to an insider, the fashion designer – who developed a close bond with Mia – is devastated to see the young couple split, and is worrying what impact this could have on footballer Romeo. Likewise, she’s worried what impact it could have on Brand Beckham, the multimillion-pound enterprise that she and David have built on the marketability of their family and lifestyle. With Mia – who regularly modelled for Victoria’s label and wore her pieces in public – now adrift, the repercussions on the brand as a whole could be big. And for somebody like Vic, who likes to be in control at all times, it’s a worrying prospect.

“Victoria loved Mia – she became like another daughter,” says an insider close to the 49 year old, who’s also mum to Brooklyn, 24, Cruz, 19, and 12-year-old Harper.

“As well as being upset for them, she worries what Romeo will do without having the stability of Mia in his life. She felt she could really trust Mia and welcome her into the family. It’s hard for them to let people into their inner circle, and now she’s concerned that Romeo may get his head turned and go a bit wild.”

News of Romeo and Mia’s split came as a shock, as they had only recently moved in together to an apartment in south London. As heat has told you, Victoria has been left rattled by seeing all her sons fly the nest – while Brooklyn has long lived in the US with wife Nicola, Cruz is now also living Stateside in his bid to find success as a singer. Romeo lives closer to the family in London, where he plays for Brentford FC, and he’s been grounded by his long-term relationship. As Victoria knows all too well, a footballer’s lifestyle can err towards untamed excess, so it’s no surprise that, now he’s single, his mum is worried.

We’re told she is also sad to lose Mia from her own life, especially since Mia has always seemed happy to follow her lead, unlike daughter-in-law Nicola. In 2022, the pair were hit with rumours that they’d fallen out after Nicola chose to wear a wedding dress by Valentino, instead of one designed by Victoria. In recent months, they’ve mended fences, and Nicola has returned to the fold as a VB ambassador, even walking for Victoria at Paris Fashion Week last week, and cosying up to her mum-in-law in a pic posted from a dress fitting.

And, in another display of allegiance, Nicola hit the streets of Paris last week in the same Dolce & Gabbana leather biker jacket her mother-in-law first wore in 2001, later paying tribute on Instagram to her “style icon”. So, with Mia’s departure having now made room for Nicola to cement herself as Vic’s number one, it’s possible there could be a silver lining to Posh’s loss of a daughter figure.

Nevertheless, it’s still a bitter pill to swallow – especially in a month where Victoria has had faced plenty of challenges, including breaking her foot at the gym and having to wear a medical boot at Paris Fashion Week.

Hobbling around on crutches last week, we’re told the reality of Romeo and Mia’s break-up left her feeling on shakier ground than ever.
