Victoria Beckham and her husband David have become known for their daring fashion over the years, making a mark with matching leather biker ’fits and setting the standard by showing up to their wedding reception in purple Antonio Berardi get-ups.
While David, 49, used to credit his fashionista wife, 50, as his style inspiration (well, if your wife’s the head of the Victoria Beckham fashion brand, why wouldn’t you?) the ex-footballer recently admitted that he now draws inspiration from a more unexpected source.
'Victoria will always laugh at me because, whenever there’s a TV show that I’m watching, I kind of morph into a character,’ David revealed. ‘So with Peaky Blinders, I went for the whole – not any particular character – I just wore everything Peaky Blinders. Then we watched Yellowstone and I was a cowboy… which she kind of liked, I think.’
Now, a source has told heat what VB really thinks. ‘She’s always been so proud of the way David dresses, as she felt it was her influence that got him into fashion, especially when they first started dating. She loves how experimental he can be with his looks and that he isn’t afraid to take risks. And she does laugh at his obsession with certain eras and TV shows and him trying to emulate them with his clothes.’
Known for his sleek and smart style, David Beckham has become something of an icon for British men’s fashion in recent years – his early-noughties cornrow hair proving that he certainly doesn’t shy away from causing a stir. Now, it turns out that the former England captain changes styles as quickly as he changes the TV channel.
However, while his wife does find this habit amusing, we’re told Posh also apparently thinks her husband’s TV-themed dressing is slightly cringeworthy and wishes that their styles would align better, especially if they’re headed out on a romantic night together.
As parents of four children – Brooklyn, 25, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 13 – it’s hard enough for the pair to find time for a date night, and we’re told Posh would prefer it to be a more stylish affair.
‘While some of David’s looks work well, she finds some a bit embarrassing and misses the days when he got joy from wearing a sharp designer suit or a fresh pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Some of his choices do not go with her style and she wants them to be on the same level when they go out. She always has lots of suggestions for date-night outfits, but he’s very stubborn and won’t be told what to do or wear. He likes to get into character and dress appropriately for the occasion – whether that’s tending to his chickens on the farm or channelling an East End gangster. He says he’s just having fun.’
According to Victoria, her beau has always tried to use clothes as a secret weapon to win her heart. In an episode of Disney+’s new documentary mini-series, In Vogue: The 90s, Posh revealed that prior to their first date, David was intimidated by the pop star who was known for loving designer clothes. Victoria said, ‘He’s like, “I don’t know what to wear, she’s the one who likes designer clothes,” and so he bought himself a full Prada look for our first date to impress me.’
However, as hard as it may be for the fashion designer, Victoria may need to let go of David’s penchant for dressing up, or at the very least, feign indifference and look the other way when the second series of The Last of Us airs and David begins dressing like a zombie.
