Sam Smith has beaten Adele and the late Amy Winehouse to receive six nominations at this year's Grammy Awards.
The London-born star whose hit single Stay With Me went to number two in the American Billboard charts, joined stars such as Pharrell Williams and Mary J. Blige for a concert to mark the shortlist in Los Angeles on Friday night.
Hosted by LL Cool J the show called ‘A Very Grammy Christmas’ celebrated the 83 shortlists with Sam Singing Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas for the show's huge finale.
Following the news of his nominations the 22-year-old said: “What's going on!! 6 Grammy nominations. Dear Lord.”
Going up against Sam for the Album Of The Year gong is Beyoncé’ self-titled album, Ed Sheeran's X, Morning Phase by Beck and Pharrell Williams' Girl.
Sam, who is a distant cousin of Lily Allen, is also up for best new artist, best pop performance, record of the year and best pop vocal album.
After being shortlisted for the nominations Sam also put crying symbols on his Twitter timeline, with the caption: “Happy tears.”
On Thursday night he wowed Hollywood when he attended the American GQ Man of the Year awards at LA's Chateau Marmont hotel.
