If there’s an embarrassing scandal surrounding the Rooney family, you’d put your money on Wayne being the cause of it. But thanks to Coleen’s ongoing battle with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy, this time it’s Wayne who thinks his wife is causing unnecessary embarrassment and is fed-up of her behaviour.

Last week, it was revealed that the two women looked set to go to the high court after failing to reach a deal over Coleen’s claims that Becky’s Instagram account was responsible for leaking stories about her. It could be a very costly fight, which threatens to expose their private lives. And Wayne – who has been caught up in many compromising situations – wants Coleen to put an end to it all for their family’s sake.

“Wayne is furious and thinks the whole situation is pathetic – they’ve had blazing rows about it,” says a source close to the couple, who have sons Kai, ten, Klay, seven, Kit, four, and Cass, two, together. “He’s told her she needs to make the whole situation go away and just settle. He thinks a court case would be a disaster – not only the cost, but what could be exposed and who could be called as a witness.

“He says it would be like throwing a hand grenade into the world of footballers’ personal lives, stirring up gossip about what they get up to. He’s very nervous that battling over privacy will mean that his past – the cheating and gambling stories and negative headlines – will be dragged up again, and it will be there on public record for his kids and teammates to see. He’s worried he’ll lose the respect of everyone.”

The source continues, “It may also hugely impact on their future earnings if they are involved in a very messy court case. He could miss out on lucrative brand deals, and he’s told her to forget about any future business deals she’s got in the pipeline, too. And all because of a silly Instagram squabble with Becky.”

In case you’d forgotten, last October, Coleen claimed stories about her originated from “Rebekah Vardy’s account”, after she conducted a five-month sting, which involved posting fake stories on her private account. She claimed she put up the posts on Instagram Stories and only allowed one person’s account to see them – which she said was Becky’s – and then waited to see if the stories were leaked.

Becky – who’s married to footballer Jamie Vardy, and was pregnant with her fifth child at the time – lashed out at her former friend, slamming her for not settling the matter in private. She claimed multiple people had access to her account and vowed to hire forensic experts to clear her name. It was also reported that Becky, 38, was demanding a public apology from Coleen, which Coleen was reluctant to give, insisting that she had faith in the legal process.

“Coleen isn’t backing down – and if that means taking Becky to court, then so be it,” we’re told. “She had been prepared to look at options to settle this quickly, but she’s told friends there’s no way in hell she’s going to give Becky a public apology. The idea of doing that has infuriated her so much, it’s had the opposite effect – it’s made her more determined

to bring this matter to court, no matter what the personal cost to herself is. Coleen is well aware of what it entails – having her personal life and what she puts on her private Instagram brought up in court and potentially having the secrets of the WAG world exposed, but she has tunnel vision on this and won’t be told to back down.”

It’s thought that by taking it to court, Coleen could end up with a six-figure bill in legal fees and court costs, and while the Rooneys are hardly poor, they have a lot of outgoing expenses at the moment, including their £20million mega-mansion, which they had hoped to have moved into by now, but is still being built. On top of that, Wayne’s football career is uncertain with the current season remaining unfinished because of coronavirus. Although he still earns a huge wage, he took a pay cut to join lower league Derby County as player-coach.

The insider adds that Wayne is also worried that pursuing a personal squabble all the way to the courts during a global health crisis could end up drawing more negative publicity for them.

“He’s told Coleen that she’s mad if she goes through with this,” we’re told. “He’s said she needs to swallow her pride and say sorry, or the Becky stuff could be the least of her worries. He was angry with her for picking a fight with Becky in the first place and hoped it would be forgotten about. But with the whole country suffering because of the pandemic, he thinks people will turn on them if she takes this to court. There are much bigger things to worry about and he feels she’s adding more stress to their family life by doing this.”

The source continues, “Everyone knows they’ve gone through a tough three years because of Wayne’s drunken misdemeanours, but they’ve managed to get back on track. This isn’t helping, but Coleen is proud and stubborn – people know not to cross her. She felt betrayed by Becky and she won’t be able to rest until this is all sorted.

“Coleen has supported Wayne through so much, and she feels that he should be doing the same for her now.”
