When Wayne Rooney took a then-16-year-old Coleen McLoughlin on their first date back in 2002 (to watch Austin Powers at the cinema), it’s probably safe to say they didn’t know they’d still be together nearly 20 years later. But against all odds, that’s exactly the milestone Mr and Mrs Rooney will be celebrating next year.
However, thanks to Wayne’s recent behaviour after a night out, the couple aren’t exactly in a good place right now, and the former England player is having to do a lot of grovelling to his angry wife… about half a million pounds-worth.
“Coleen is still livid with Wayne after his recent antics, and Wayne knows that when she’s angry for this long, he has a lot of making up to do,” our Rooney insider says.
“Next year will be their 20th anniversary of getting together, and Coleen has always wanted to celebrate it by renewing their wedding vows – something Wayne hasn’t been keen on. But now he thinks it could be a good idea, so Coleen has got something to plan and look forward to. No expense would be spared, and Wayne is preparing to spend at least £500,000 on it, which will include a brand new ring for Coleen and other bits of jewellery. She’s said when it comes to the ring, the bigger the rock, the better.”
Coleen, 35, is still furious with Wayne, also 35, after he was pictured passed out drunk in a hotel room with some girls he had met that evening at a nightclub. Even though she accepts that nothing happened between them, she feels he shouldn’t be getting himself into situations like that, especially as it has happened so many times in the past. And while she has threatened to leave him if he doesn’t get help for his drinking, deep down, Coleen wants their marriage to work for the sake of their four sons – Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and three-year-old Cass.

We’re told that she sees a huge vow renewal party as something to aim for, as well as a chance to take her mind off things and make sure Wayne – who is currently manager of Derby County – behaves himself up until then and beyond.
“The party probably wouldn’t be until next summer because of Wayne’s football commitments, and it would coincide with their first date, but Coleen is looking forward to it,” our insider explains. “It really would be the party to end all parties, and everyone who has supported them for the past 20 years would be invited, including some of Coleen’s WAG friends and Wayne’s teammates. They are thinking of having it in the grounds of their new mansion, so it can also be a celebration of them finally moving in and a fresh start for all of them. It also means they would have total privacy.”

The source continues, “Coleen is getting excited about designer dresses, booking bands, getting in the best caterers for the food and drink and, of course, choosing a new ring. But she doesn’t want it to be a farce, so she needs to make sure she and Wayne are in a good place before committing to anything. She knows what some people may think, but she’s past caring. Her marriage and family life are the things most important to her, and after everything they have gone through over the past 20 years, she thinks she deserves to be spoilt and is happy to let Wayne make it up to her.”
