After being eliminated from the competition, 25-year-old Monica made the gesture, which lead viewers to label her insensitive and offensive in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks.

One person tweeted: “Yep! Cringing at Monica shouting 'bang bang bang' too whilst doing a gun sign. Not a good weekend for the X Factor!!”

While another outraged fan said: “If she's going to be famous she need to understand that making a gun gesture whilst shouting bang bang bang IS OFFENSIVE.”

Monica has now taken to Twitter to apologise.

“I want to apologise for any offence caused on the @TheXFactor tonight. I wasn't thinking beyond the moment & it was insensitive, sorry.”

Her actions were in stark contrast to Simon Cowell's decision on Saturday night to cut any song that had references to guns in respect for the 150 people who lost their lives in Paris on Friday night.
