We may be totally over it now but we were all a little bit sad when Zayn Malik and Perrie Edwards split, weren't we?

The former One Direction star has now been frankly honest about the real reason he ended his romance with the Little Mix singer.

Pop hunk Zayn has been writing plenty of material for his first solo album Mind Of Mine after putting his boyband days in the past last March, and has drawn on experiences from his love life for musical inspiration.

The singer has revealed how much of his music is based on relationship troubles, suggesting to Complex magazine that he simply fell out of love with Perrie.

He said: “There’s a good ratio of both. There’s a lot of falling in love and a lot of falling out of love. It’s probably 60/40, falling out of love.

“I feel like you get creative with things when you can best be honest. Whether that’s positive or negative, it can work both ways.

“If you’re in a really good place, you can write a really good, upbeat song. When you’re in a shit place you can write a downbeat f*cking ballad!

“That’s just the way it is. But I feel like you can draw good creative things from both.”

Fans were shocked when Zayn featured girlfriend Gigi Hadid in the video for his debut solo single Pillowtalk shortly after they quietly went public with their romance.

And, despite the model appearing in the promo, Zayn wants to keep his love life out of the spotlight.

He said: “I try to keep the two very separate. I try to, as much as I can. But there’s only so much you can do.

“I’m learning to deal with it. It’s just one of those things now, in the background. I just leave it as a bit of noise in the background.”
