“As I got older, I started listening to my dad’s old records like 90s stuff, a lot of R and B and rap,” Zayn says. “[This is] a personal album, we recorded a lot of it in the woods and stuff like this.”
He added: “I don’t feel like people really know what I’m going to give them, musically. Once they hear it, I feel like they will understand me a little bit more, and they’ll understand why I did what I did, and why I left the band, and why I had to write this shit down.”
The former One Direction star, who walked out of the band in March, also hinted at his frustration towards the end of his time with them, saying: “It’s nice to come out of a place where you’re being told what to do.”
The full interview will be on FADER Magazine at 6pm EST (that’s around midnight here, guys!)
