Here at heatworld we often liken Tom Grennan's voice to salted caramel, that sound car tyres make on a gravel driveway and a freshly-groomed poodle. Basically, it's that blissful blend of rugged and relaxing and our ear drums appreciate it. A lot.
So, since his debut album Lighting Matches is finally out today, we thought we'd catch up with him for a chinwag about it. That and the World Cup, obviously.
It's comin' home, huns. It's comin' home.
Your album's finally out there, Tom. What's your favourite track at the moment?
"It changes all the time. There's one on there called Make 'em Like You, there's one called Aboard, the final song on there which is called Little By Little Love; I love that song. All of them have their own little moments for me."
Who were your biggest inspirations as a kid?
"Footballers, mate. It wasn't until I was 17 or 18 that music fully became a part of my life as much as it is now. I love everyone from Queen to Madonna, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Amy Winehouse. I love Adele and George Michael.
"I love hip-hop. Eminem, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar. I love Skepta, Giggs."
What genre's your vibe right now?
"Hip-hop and grime. That's the music everyone's listening to at the moment. But I love country music as well."
How would you describe your sound to someone who - quite foolishly - hasn't heard your music yet in five words?
"It's fiery, passionate, real, exciting and tearful. A bit of everything, mate.
Right, now can you give us three facts about yourself that nobody knows yet?
My biggest phobia is elbows. I hate an elbow, even talking about them makes me feel sick. I try to drink four litres of water a day, that's a bit of a random fact. I'm petrified of wasps, as well."
Tom Grennan's new album Lighting Matches is OUT NOW. Go and buy/stream/do whatever with it. It's brilliant.
