Despite many of us practicing social distancing for weeks now, when Boris Johnson announced an enforced lockdown in the UK it all suddenly felt a bit scary. At least it did for me, someone who typically loves having an excuse to binge-watch television in bed all weekend (literally, it seems I’ve been prepping for quarantine my entire life).

I’ve not left the house for non-essential reasons since Johnson announced Londoners should work from home, and yet suddenly, at 8.30pm last night when the new rules were announced, I immediately felt claustrophobic. I turned to Twitter in a moment of self-sabotage, and rather than being greeted by the normal panic-inducing tweets about how terrible this all is, I found myself smiling at my phone. The lockdown memes had descended already.

There’s something about the lightness of a meme that makes this unprecedented situation feel much less terrifying. ‘If we’re able to joke about it, it mustn’t be that bad,’ my brain automatically reasons. What’s more, when the daunting fact that we’re literally being forced to be isolated from our loved ones hits, it’s nice to remember that actually, we’re all in this together.
