One small step for chocolate frogs, one giant step for mankind

We recently went on a bit of rant about the ever-increasing price of one of our favourite chocolate treats, as it was brought to our attention that Freddos were being sold for a frankly extortionate price in some retailers.

A London sweet shop called Kingdom of Sweets were reportedly spotted selling Freddos for a whopping 99p. An absolute outrage.

While this absurd price of almost £1 for a little choccy frog did seem to be an isolated incident, the price of Freddos has increased from 10p to 30p (all while decreasing in size) over the last 18 years.

Some clever clogs over at VoucherCloud came up with the Freddo price index, monitoring the gradual rise in price compared to the rate of inflation. And for a while it looked as though we were more likely to be able to afford a three bed-semi in London rather than a cheeky Freddo for an afternoon snack.

But, FINALLY, we’ve got some good news on the Freddo front as Cadbury’s have dropped the price back down to 25p per frog.

“Following a full review of our Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo product portfolio we have found a way to reduce the PMP [price-marked packs] of Cadbury Dairy Milk Freddo back to 25p and are happy to have been able to pass this saving on to customers,” Cadbury’s explained according to The Mirror.

The drop in price is also said to affect other Cadbury stalwarts such as Chomp bars, the finger of Fudge and a the mini bags of Chocolate buttons – which will all see a 16% decrease.

However, according to Vouchercloud, Freddo’s are still falling victim to the rate of inflation.

And while, if things stay as they are, the bars may not reach the dizzing heights of 35p by 2020 as previously thought, we could still see a significant increase in price over the next ten years.

According to the index Freddo will cost 36p by the year 2030, having risen 4.36% per year.
