Disney is remaking MARY POPPINS as a live-action MUSICAL. IS NOTHING SACRED???

Sit down and take a seat, Disney. We need to have a word. Now look, your recent work has been excellent: Tangled, great; Brave, ace; Frozen… our site won’t let us publish emojis, but if we could, there’d be a long line of the fire one right here.

But to hear that you’re planning to do a live-action remake of Mary Poppins? No. No, Disney. You have gone too far this time.

Yep, the animation conglomerate has announced that a new version of Mary Poppins is in the works, and while it won’t be a straight-up remake of the original, it will be a MUSICAL.

And it’ll be set 20 years after the first one, which to us is where the problem crops up. Because Julie Andrews IS Mary Poppins, isn’t she? And she’s aged a helluva lot more than 20 years since the first film came out in 1964.

Directed by Into The Woods’ Rob Marshall and produced by John DeLuca and Marc Platt, the remake – NOT a sequel, as Disney wants to stress – will still be based on the original books written by P. L. Travers, who was played by Emma Thompson in 2013’s Saving Mr Banks.

And it’ll have songs written by one of the two brothers who wrote Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Chim Chim Cher-ee and Let's Go Fly a Kite, Richard Sherman, so maybe it won’t be as bad as we’re thinking.

As the original was set in Edwardian London in 1910, this one will revolve around the Banks family in 1930 – so expect more cars and less chimneysweeping.

Oh – and women had the vote by 1930 thanks to the Suffragettes, so there’ll be no more Mrs Banks twirling around with her sash on. Boo.
