Around 250,000 people have signed a petition calling for the release of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey after their case received lots of mainstream coverage, thanks to Netflix series, Making A Murderer.

The pair, who were convicted of murdering Teresa Halbach, have got the backing of hordes of fans who believe them to be innocent. The documentary, which was filmed over ten years, focusses on the injustices of the case and suggests they didn’t get a fair trial.

The Change.org petition has racked up 273,000 signatures at the time of writing, and was created by Michael Seyedian, a fan of the series upset with the outcome of the 2007 trial.

“Steven Avery should be exonerated at once by pardon, and the Manitowoc County officials complicit in his two false imprisonments should be held accountable to the highest extent of the US criminal and civil justice systems,” he states.

Since the show’s debuts on the streaming service in December 2015, the prosecution have slammed the series and claimed the creators left out evidence that was used to convict Avery and Dassey.
