Sam Smith and John Legend announce official Red Nose Day single, Lay Me Down

Two of the biggest pop acts are teaming up for this year’s official Red Nose Day Single – and have said that 100 per cent of the profits will go to charity.

Sam Smith and John Legend have recorded a special version of Sam’s track Lay Me Down, which will be released to raise money for Comic Relief.

The original song is off BRITs winner Sam’s debut album In the Lonely Hour, though both he and John have forgone their usual royalties.

Speaking ahead of their joint performance, which will happen this Friday (13 March) – Red Nose Day 2015 – at the London Palladium, Sam explained why the song was such a personal choice for him.

“Lay Me Down holds a very special place in my heart – not only did I perform it at the BRITs, I’m now going to perform it live on the Red Nose Day show with the extremely talented John Legend, which is so exciting.”

He added: “I recently visited a Comic Relief-funded project in my home town that supports the young LGBT community in London. I’m extremely proud that my single will help raise money for projects like this and many others in the UK and across Africa.”

Other celebrities getting involved in Comic Relief are Dermot O’Leary, the newly single David Walliams and former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts.
