Sam Smith dropped the hotly anticipated track for Spectre, Writing’s On The Wall, this morning and, since it’s been played on the airwaves, it’s split opinion. Big time.
Like most songs, you either love it or hate it, but Sam’s come under fire from 007 fans who claim his latest track is a rip off of other songs, including Michael Jackson’s Earth Song.
“The new Bond theme is way better than I expected although it’s poor lyrically. Anyone picking up some Earth Song vibes?” one person tweeted. Another said: “Initial reaction to #writingsonthewall - sounds like a mixture of ‘Earth Song’ & something you’d hear in a theatre production.”
Others said that Sam’s voice just didn’t work for the track (slightly mean we think) and die-hard Bond fans called for the return of Shirley Bassey.
We asked for your opinions on heatRadio this afternoon and most of you loved Sam’s new track. One happy tweeter commented: “Opinion might be divided but I LOVE Sam Smith's new Bond song… Sam Smith has done it justice”. We agree.
Earlier today Sam said the song only took him days to write because he wasn’t worried about it, telling Nick Grimshaw: “I haven’t really felt pressure at all with Bond until the last few days actually because I’m just so nervous about what people are going to think about it.”
He added: “I don’t think it’s a number one friendly song if you know what I mean. Who knows, but I don’t think it will at all, but I’m not looking for that.”
We are Sam. And we think you could have it in the bag!
