No biggie, just a Shetland pony ambling into the Winsford police station in Cheshire.
The station's superintendent Peter Crowcroft was swift to offer a punning account of events: "We were somewhat saddled with our unexpected guest, who in the early hours of the morning quickly became the mane event of the night shift…" (our italics). Well pun away, officer, but what about the pony, eh? What did they pony want?
Superintendent Crowcroft acknowledged that the horse was known to the station as resident in an adjacent field, but at no point did he indicate that anyone had asked the horse what it wanted from the police.
For all we know, it had been the victim of a mugging and was seeking help and redress. Maybe it wanted to report a case of benefit fraud. Perhaps it was seeking witness protection after years of participation in organised crime. But we'll never know, because the police just shooed it outside.
