Last month people rejoiced at the news when WhatsApp’s ‘delete for everyone’ feature was introduced.
The feature allowed users to delete those messages they had second thoughts about, however, something has come to light which is bad news for those who had thought they had deleted them!
According to a Spanish Android blog, Android users can STILL access messages that have be 'deleted'.
Translated from Spanish, the blog reads, 'We have discovered a way to recover or see messages deleted by the other person in a WhatsApp chat.
'What we found is that the messages are stored in the notification register of the Android system.
'So, it's just a matter of entering that record to see the messages that the other person deleted.'
Any messages will stay in the notification log even if they are deleted by the sender, so this could be really bad news if you've sent a potentially embarrassing message.
Time to get checking your phone!
So, while the deleted messages aren't directly visible in WhatsApp if you know where to look you can read them.
If you want to read those deleted messages then here are a couple of ways to find them.
So, there you go! You will only be able to read the first 100 characters of any deleted messages and the notification log will be refreshed every few hours, so if you wait too long the message will be gone.
At the time of the release of its 'delete for everyone' feature, WhatsApp described it saying it 'allows you to delete specific messages you have sent to either a group or an individual chat. This is particularly useful if you sent a message to the wrong chat or if the message you sent contains a mistake.'
They went on to say, 'Messages you successfully delete for everyone will be replaced with 'This message was deleted' in your recipients' chats.'
However they do go on to say that both the sender and the recipient must be using the latest version of WhatsApp for this to work.
