You already know The Simpsons and Family Guy, but there are now lots more cartoons for adults, and they’re hilarious, smart and (quite often) a little bit blue.
Yes, you do have to have a warped sense of humour to enjoy these shows, tbh – but if you’re happy to get your witty one-liners from a horse called Bo or a permanently randy “hormone monster”, then these are the shows for you…

Adventure Time
It’s telling that a common Google search for this show is, “Is Adventure Time for stoners?” It’s a wildly trippy show about a boy, his dog and the magical Land of Ooo in which they live. Ostensibly for children, this show has become a cult favourite for us big kids, thanks to its serious “anything goes” ethos. There’s literally a character called Lumpy Space Princess.
Bob’s Burgers
The straight-faces of the characters in Bob’s Burgers give you a hint of the dry humour of the show. The Belcher family make the mundane funny – like an episode dedicated entirely to them replacing their “sacred couch”. They also often burst into song, which can only be a good thing. Bad Stuff Happens In The Bathroom is our favourite.
Big Mouth
Dealing with the painful subject of puberty, Big Mouth touches on topics like periods, masturbation, first crushes, divorce, drugs and everything else that plagues the mind of a teen. Listen out for amazing cameos, such as Kristen Wiig as a vagina, or Thandie Newton as a hormone monster.
Archer
Sterling Archer – imagine James Bond, but far less capable and far more sardonic – is a spy in an agency run by his own, overbearing mother. Cocky, impulsive and almost permanently drunk, Archer fights the bad guys and beds all the women he can, alongside his team of hilarious characters. Ten series in and the show is still coming up with new and exciting concepts. Season ten is set in space, people!
Rick and Morty
We all wish we had an alcoholic mad scientist grandpa to take us on wild adventures, right? That’s exactly what Morty has in his grandpa Rick – at least in one of the many dimensions they exist in. The fourth series has just arrived on Netflix – check it out for a cartoon vision of Back To The Future. On acid.
BoJack Horseman
We love a self-deprecating character, and BoJack is the extreme of that. The literal horse-man is a self-loathing alcoholic actor trying to get his career back on track – often with destructive consequences. Now in its sixth series – starting off with BoJack in rehab – the show has attracted amazing guest stars, including Stanley Tucci and Whoopi Goldberg.
