Film buff Stephanie Gallimore teamed up with GoThinkBig to cover all the biggest films from the BFI London Film Festival. From speaking to Tom Hiddleston at the premiere of High Rise to rubbing shoulders with all the stars of Suffragette – Steph was in the thick of the action.
Here, she gives heat her take on Black Mass.
“Black Mass is Johnny Depp’s latest piece for serious acting and, although he and the rest of the cast do a good job, there doesn’t seem much more to this film than the calibre of it’s stars.
"James 'Whitey' Bulger connects with the FBI through his childhood friend John Connolly. There’s not much else to say, sadly.
"Black Mass feels more of a mood piece lacking in movement and it seems that the characters aren’t developed enough to take interest in. Despite the movie being two hours long, it still feels like there is too much in there.
"It plays out as death after death by men fighting for territory. This is a testosterone fuelled movie giving the women a very low percentage on-screen time, leaving you wondering if there was any point to having the women in the film at all.
"There are individual scenes with impressive cinematography and are intense within themselves, but they just don’t add up to much of a story when strung together. The acting might be the only saving grace for this crime drama.
"Give it a go if you’ve got two hours to kill and are a big fan of Johnny…"
