Winston McKenzie has refused to apologise for making homophobic comments on Celebrity Big Brother.
The former UKIP politician was the first person to be evicted from the house last night.
Before entering, he said in his introductory video tape: “I’d cope with a homosexual in the house. I’d just have to be standing against a brick wall all the time,” prompting hundreds of viewers to complain to Ofcom.
The former housemate was grilled by host Emma Willis on Friday night and likened gay adoption to child abuse.
After facing an angry crowd, he said: “I’m being portrayed as a people hater. There are people in life who are gay and have fought long and hard for their rights.
“When everything is done it’s the people who decide. We live in a democratic society. Thank God we have the opportunity to express our opinions.”
Emma said his remarks were “extremely offensive” and, after he said he held his views because of his religion, she said: “Christian or not Christian, that doesn’t come into it. It’s the way you word things.”
He responded: “I expressed my feelings at the time, Emma. It doesn’t mean to say that I am one to tell someone who wants to adopt a child and look after them that they can’t. I don’t lay down the rules. The people make the laws.
“My comment was made in the heat of the moment. It’s not something that was done from the heart.
“I agree with my heartfelt feelings. I am not going to change my mind or the way I am or my thoughts just to please other people. That’s what you’re asking me to do.”
When asked if he still held that view, Winston snapped: “Would you like me to sit here and lie? You don’t need to go over that again. I’ve made my statement.”
An exasperated Emma hit back: “It’s such a shame and it’s so sad that people still have these views and can say things like that and think it’s ok.
“You say that you are a man of the people, but you are discounting such a large part of the population because of your views.”
Celebrity Big Brother continues tonight at 9pm.
