Chris Evans has announced that he's leaving Top Gear.

The DJ and presenter took to Twitter to share the news, saying:

However, Chris seemed keen to look to the future and posted about his other endeavours:

In a statement released via the BBC, Chris said: "I have never worked with a more committed and driven team than the team I have worked with over the last 12 months.

"I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause. I remain a huge fan of the show, always have been, always will be."

Chris' move comes in the wake of falling ratings for the show with the series finale on Sunday night recieving the lowest number of viewers yet.

Top Gear Chris Evans

Top Gear has been beset with criticism since Chris and his co-host Matt Le Blanc took the helm.

It was even claimed that Chris struggled to do basic Top Gear tasks such as driving and talking at the same time - although that feels a bit mean.

It's not currently clear if the rest of the front-of-camera Top Gear team will return for the next series.
