Doctor Foster

The whole heat office/entire nation has been gripped by series two of Doctor Foster and after weeks of excruciating injustice, plot twists and some very unnerving hate sex the series finale airs on BBC One tonight.

We’re expecting a whole heap of drama to unfold, particularly after writer Mike Bartlett hinted a major character would be murdered.

He revealed that the plot for the BBC One show is actually based on that of Medea, a Greek tragedy which sees a scorned wife violently murder her cheating husband.

"In the original pitch, I never actually said, 'We're going to do Medea at 9pm on BBC One' because it probably wouldn't have gone down very well," he told the Radio Times.

"But that idea was always behind it. I wanted to take some of those misogynist ideas about mad women and witches, and hopefully subvert them."

And the cliff-hanger in the penultimate episode, plus Simon Foster insisting the only way he’s leaving Parminster ‘is in a coffin’, only fuelled further theories of an untimely death.

But fans on Twitter have also come up with some alternative theories about how the events in tonight’s episode will unfold. Many are convinced evil Simon is going to frame Gemma Foster for murder.

"Sian is probably Simon's new woman and in on the plan with him to murder adulterous kate & frame gemma. #DoctorFoster", a viewer tweeted.

And some reckon Simon predicted his own demise, using Gemma’s phone to text their son Tom Foster telling him that she killed his dad.

“I think he txt tom of her phone to say I’ve killed ur dad. that is the thing he told him ages ago, that your mus gonna kill me #doctorfoster,” one fan wrote.

Another (very bleak) theory is that Tom murders his father.

"My doctor foster theory is that Tom tries to kill Simon and then Gemma takes the blame and they all end up alone,” a Twitter user wrote.

GAHH! We can’t wait to see what happens.

Doctor Foster concludes tonight at 9pm on BBC One
