Emmerdale viewers were over the moon when Mandy Dingle returned to the Dales last week after leaving in 2001. The character, played by Lisa Riley, was hugely popular - so it was no surprise that Mandy had such a warm welcome back to the soap.

In true Mandy style, she had a huge bombshell to drop on the residents - that she'd had a son, Vinnie, whilst she was away, who just so happened to be 17-years-old... Of course, long-time fans of the show will remember that Mandy and Paddy had a fling before she left, 17 years ago.

So when people met Vinnie and got to know him, it seemed as though the show writers were trying to tell us that Paddy did, in fact, have a son - which would have been a timely revelation, considering that he and Chas Dingle have just tragically lost their daughter, Grace.

However, in last night's episode (8th January), it was revealed that Paddy in fact was NOT the father of Vinnie after Mandy burst into the Woolpack pub with something important to tell her ex-husband.

...but Bob knows that will barely scrape the tip of his financial issues. As he searches for cheap accommadation, he comes across an ad for a homeless hostel.

Although Marlon tried to keep Mandy from spilling the beans, Chas wanted to know what was going on - leading Marlon to blurt out that Paddy WAS Vinnie's father. Mandy immediately refuted his claims, saying, "Paddy don't have a secret son. At least it's not Vinnie. And it's not with me."

Of course, fans were left shocked by this - considering how likely it seemed that Paddy was Vinnie's father. Taking to Twitter, many vented their shock, with one writing, 'The kid is not Paddy's son? Well for once I'm surprised!' and another added, 'Emmerdale, you cannot convince me that Paddy is not that kid's dad.'

But it was Mandy's next revelation that was completely unexpected, as she revealed the real reason behind her return to the Dales after so long. She'd been having a clear out of her belongings, and came across something intriguing in some of Paddy's old things that she'd had.

She told Chas and Marlon how she'd found a photo of Paddy's favourite wrestler, Bear Wolf, amongst his old things, and it had a love letter to Paddy's mum Barbara hidden in the frame - and was dated September 1968.

This means he could be Paddy's biological father since Paddy was born in July 1969. Mandy and Chas were desperate to tell him, but Marlon advised them against it since it could deeply upset him. What will they do?

Emmerdale airs every weeknight at 7pm on ITV, with a second showing on Tuesday nights at 8pm.
