It's been widely acknowledged among Potterheads that Albus Dumbledore was gay after author J.K. Rowling confirmed his sexuality back in 2007. Fans of the Harry Potter series knew that he'd had a relationship with uber-baddy Gellert Grindelwald, but at the time, we barely knew anything about what happened between them.

It's only since the newest films in the Harry Potter universe - the Fantastic Beasts collection - have been released that we've been able to delve into Dumbledore's past relationships a little more.

And although the newest film, The Crimes of Grindelwald, didn't explicitly address the nature of Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship - save one moment where Dumbledore reveals they were "closer than brothers" - actor Jude Law has now made a powerful statement about his character's sexuality.

Speaking to the New York Times, Jude said, "The world is ready for an openly gay Dumbledore, and if it isn’t, it bloody well should be."

The term 'Longbottoming' was coined to describe people who became extremely attractive when they grew up after Matthew Lewis turned into a hunk!

He continued, "Put it this way: This film is not about his homosexuality, nor does his sexuality define him. But that relationship is certainly a defining element of who he is and what he’s about. I also don’t think he’s someone who has given his heart or his soul to many people.

"The aftermath of their relationship left him reeling, and he’s packed his heart in ice, to be honest, and no-one’s quite thawed it."

Despite the fact that fans wanted a more obvious reference to the nature of Dumbledore and Grindelwald's relationship, they have praised Jude's portrayal of Dumbledore.

Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote, 'Jude Law played Dumbledore as gay as he possibly could under the circumstances and I respect him,' and another added, 'I knew Jude Law would be the perfect young, hot, gay Dumbledore and I was not disappointed.'
