Game Of Thrones degree

We have Game Of Thrones toilets, Game Of Thrones sex toys and now there’s a Game Of Thrones degree, thanks to a university in British Columbia, which is starting a course on George R.R. Martin’s epic tales of killing and shagging.

Despite taking his good, sweet time putting together the next novel in the series, The Winds Of Winter, (he might as well be chiseling each word into granite at this rate) you can study 'Our Modern Medieval: The Song of Ice and Fire as contemporary Medievalism' later this year, which will cover "the role of the medieval in the popular consciousness of the late 20th and early 21st centuries".

We wouldn’t be surprised if lots of lazy students opt to just watch the HBO series instead - that’s what we’d do. Nevertheless George has previously been praised for his compelling writing of female characters and his incredibly complex plots which are considerably downsized for the show, for practical reasons, rather than ‘people are stupid couch potato’ reasons.

"The course will take the works of George R.R. Martin as the central text for an investigation of how the Medieval is reimagined in our current moment”, explains the university’s website.

"Reacting both to the High Fantasy genre of the 1970s and '80s (inspired by, and largely imitating the mode of Tolkien's novels), and to post-everything nature of the last 20 years, Martin's works hold an influential place in the popular modern imagined medieval, largely supplanting any real notion of the European Middle Ages in the minds of most of its readers and viewers.

"As such, we will be considering Martin's works as much for what they tell us about our own moment, as for what they tell us about our ideas of the past."

Coming soon: The Netflix and Chill degree.
