Hello and welcome to the all-new heatworld Girls recap! Come in, sit down, feel sad. Because when we last left Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna, things were NOT GOOD. And guess what? When we come back to New York, it’s raining. Which means BAD in TV terms.
At the end of last series, Hannah accepted a place at Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and that means she’ll be leaving Adam behind in New York. They’re still staying together, though! It’ll be ALL FINE! Marnie’s still shagging her partner in crimes against folk music, Desi – who, yes, has a girlfriend – and Shoshanna is directionless and miserable after being really, really mean to Ray. Jessa? Oh, she just tried to kill the old woman she cares for in some kind of assisted suicide madness.

Girls Season 4 episode 1 recap
Din dins
First scene, and we’re at dinner with Hannah and her parents. Just like the first ever scene in Girls (you know, the “I think I could be the voice of our generation” one), Hannah’s over-ordering food. Adam’s not there (see, we predicted doom and gloom), arriving late from an audition. Yeah, he’s an actor now.
Meal with the Mels
Shoshanna’s parents, incredibly, are revealed to be BOTH called Mel. Melanie and Melvin. Amazing.
This must have been awkward to film...
So, Marnie’s secret affair with Desi is going well: she’s so awkward around his (very sweet) girlfriend that she calls her “girl”. Nope. Too street for you, Marnie. Stop it.And yes, you can see a very NSFW GIF version of the picture above right here .
Jazz brunch
She’s not happy for long, though. When she sings at a jazz brunch (JAZZ. BRUNCH.) the crowd of kids aren’t that receptive and she leaves in tears. “This business is not for sissy bitches” points out Elijah. And he’s right.
More dinner
Ray is still trying to make basketball shorts as day wear happen. Despite this, he and Shosh make up and she forgives him for secretly sleeping with Marnie, telling him: “You totally picked the best one of my friends to bone, because I never really liked her anyway.” Oh my god, us too, Shosh!
Broody, broody Adam being broody
Marnie turns up to say goodbye to Hannah, although we kind of feel like she’s she’s crying because Hannah’s the last person who likes her in New York. Adam, on the other hand, doesn’t even get out of bed. He watches Hannah leave through the window, all silent and brooding. Oh Adam. OH ADAM.
