If you thought Jamie Dornan was a nice guy, wait until you meet his dad. Professor Jim Dornan is not only a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist – he’s also changing the game of football. And, he’s incredibly nice. So nice in fact, we didn’t want the conversation to end when heat talked to him about his new invention…circular football.
Jim created the game – where players try and score into a goal in the centre of a pitch rather than at two ends – with his personal trainer and now, the ideas been picked up by FIFA and is being introduced all over the world.
“It was something I did in a very limited way with my father 50 years ago and then with my own children – we used to play around the tree – rather than taking over the whole beach, you play around a bucket or around a barrel,” Jim told us.

“I mentioned it to my personal trainer about two years ago and he said it sounded good. So, we developed a few rules for it, then we took it to FIFA and they loved it. Their head of technical, I remember him standing there in Zurich scratching his head…”
We were scratching our heads a little when Jim started to tell us about it. We do celebs best, you see, not football. But luckily for us, Jim pulled in Jamie (heat’s 2015 hottest hunk!) and his mate, gorgeous golfer Rory McIlroy to help show it off.
Jim explains: “Rory’s very competitive and very good. We filmed it on Christmas Eve, it was so good of Rory to come and do it. The girls who worked in the leisure centre couldn’t believe that there was Jamie and Rory.
“They’re both very competitive but they know each other. They both play five-a-side soccer every week. My dream is that you’ll see it in situations like on the beach, where families or five-a-side teams wouldn’t be taking up a whole park or a beach but would be playing in a circle.”
Who’d have thought it, eh? But if it’s good enough for Jamie (and FIFA) we’ll be giving it a go.
