Fans of the original Mary Poppins, played by the wonderful Dame Julie Andrews, were more than a little bit sceptical about there being a remake of the beloved 1964 film. But almost three weeks after the release of Mary Poppins Returns, the film has grossed over $260 million worldwide.

Although there'll always be uncertainty about a remake of a classic film, it seems as though Disney have knocked it out of the park with Mary Poppins Returns - and already reportedly have a sequel "in the works".

Director Rob Marshall told The Sun that the team are already working on a potential sequel, saying, "It is early stages but I will say right now that there were eight books, so there’s a lot of great material still to mine. That’s what we worked from, those incredible eight books of P.L. Travers. So, you know..."

He added that Mary Poppins could become an enduring character on the big screen, even following in the footsteps of franchises like Star Wars and James Bond, "Listen, how many Star Wars films have there been, you know what I mean? Or James Bond films. If there’s a great character and story to tell, why not?"

Frozen 2

The first Frozen film was one of the most popular children's films of the decade, so it's no surprise that a sequel has been in the works since its release in 2013. Bringing back Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel as sisters Anna and Elsa, Frozen 2 will be released in the UK on 22nd November 2019.

Producer John DeLuca added that he thought Emily Blunt would be happy to return to the role, telling the publication, "Emily does light up when she speaks to me about it. And if the people want it, I think it will happen."

Last year was pretty big for Emily - not only did she step into Mary Poppins' practically perfect shoes, she also starred in A Quiet Place alongside her husband John Krasinski, who also directed it.
