Netflix is taking on one of the most controversial cases of recent years in a new documentary about the disappearance of Madeline McCann.

In 2007, three-year-old Madeline disappeared from her hotel room while on holiday in Portugal’s Praia de Luz with her parents and two siblings.

She has been missing ever since, and it has become one of the most heavily-documented missing person cases in modern history. There have been several potential sightings and suspects over the years, but Madeline's whereabouts remain unknown.

Even today the case still makes headlines.

The true crime Netflix series will be made up of eight episodes, and will include interviews with key figures and investigators.

The release date is yet to be announced.

Netflix have taken on controversial, high-profile crimes in their documentaries before. They had massive success with Making a Murderer, a true crime series about the murder of Teresa Halbach, which Stephen Avery and Brendan Dassey were convicted for.

This gripped viewers – and triggered another look into the case, with Stephen’s lawyer recently revealing a new alternate suspect and new evidence.

A second series is underway.

Last year Netflix introduced another true crime seriesto their collection: the one-part Amanda Knox documentary, which looks at the story behind the 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher.

Amanda Knox was charged with murdering Meredith, and served almost four years in an Italian prison – but was then acquitted.

Then, most recently, The Keepers has been added to Netflix: a series looking at the story behind the 1960s murder of nun Cathy Cesnik.
