Filming wrapped on Peaky Blinders series five in January 2019, with the BBC One official Twitter account sharing the news in a tweet.
What channel is Peaky Blinders on?
Peaky Blinders originally aired on BBC Two for the first four seasons, but after the success of the show, it's now been moved to BBC One. Director of BBC Content Charlotte Moore explained the decision behind the move in a statement, saying, "Peaky Blinders is world class drama at the top of its game and the time has arrived for it to move to the UK’s biggest channel.
"Steven Knight’s epic storytelling is authentic and utterly compelling and I want to give it the chance to be enjoyed by an even broader audience on BBC One. We couldn’t have asked for a better response to series four and the impact it had with young audiences. This move will also give BBC Two more creative headroom to experiment with new drama."
Steven himself added, "I am thrilled that our precious Peaky Blinders is moving to BBC One. Peaky is a show nurtured and grown by the audience who have found us through word of mouth. Hopefully this move will help us reach even more people."
What's Peaky Blinders about?
Peaky Blinders is about a crime family from Birmingham called the Shelbys. Led by second-eldest brother Tommy, the show so far has centred around him gaining power and notoriety not only in the UK, but overseas as well.
When the show was first announced, the official BBC synopsis read, 'Peaky Blinders is an epic gangster family saga that begins in 1919 in the lawless slum neighborhoods of post-war Birmingham. Peaky Blinders is a dazzling picture of England which blows away preconceptions even though the characters and events are taken directly from the pages of history.
'They now burst into life in a vibrant evocation of a hedonistic age, where the clothes are razor-sharp, the music fast and the dancing outrageous. The real Peaky Blinders were a scandal and this fiction will be the same...'
What will happen in Peaky Blinders series five?
At the end of series four, we saw Tommy be elected as a Labour MP for Birmingham South and welcome a daughter with on-off lover Lizzie Stark, whom he’s since married, as we discovered in the season five premiere.
Series five picks up four years later in 1929 at the moment of the Wall Street Crash, and the official synopsis reads as follows, 'Series five finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929.
'Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy Shelby MP is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.'
Show creator Steven Knight has recently revealed that he thinks the fifth season could be the best so far, calling it "really good", adding that it's "fantastic and it all fell together beautifully." He went on to say, "Great performances and I think audiences are going to be on the edge of their seats.
"I did some research because the new series starts in 1929. In that era, some of the most notorious gangs were in Glasgow. This [season] is about a particular gang called The Billy Boys who become an issue for our friends in Birmingham."
Although some fans thought the trailer may have teased an incredibly devastating death, with many being convinced that Tommy’s son Charles had passed away, he was thankfully alive and well!
The season five finale was as explosive as you'd imagine, with the return of a favourite character! The fifth season also broke an incredible viewing record.
Who are the cast members of Peaky Blinders?
RADIO Peaky Blinders cast stacked
Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, Season 1-

He plays the main character of Tommy Shelby in the show - head of the Shelby crime family and recently-appointed Labour MP for Birmingham.Of his role on the show, Cillian said: "I'm not a tough guy at all so it was by far the toughest character I have ever portrayed, and him being so physical and the amount of respect and fear that this family has in this town means that we all had to look tough. I've been a fan of Steven Knight's work for quite a while and the quality just jumped off the page. It's just very unusual and very compelling and the character Tom Shelby is kind of an enigma."
Helen McCrory as Polly Gray, Season 1-
Helen McCrory was a prolific actress, having worked for many years in film, TV and on-stage, who heartbreakingly passed away in April 2021. Having played Tony Blair's wife Cherie twice, she was also known for playing Narcissa Malfoy in the last three Harry Potter films, for her role in Skyfall and a plethora of theatre roles, among many others. Helen played Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, the matriarch of the family. It's unknown whether she will be a part of the final season.Of the role, Helen said: "I play Aunt Polly who has run this gang for four years while the boys are away in the trenches. You come to the family when they come back. We know she's had a past life of a man and children and in the series we find out who they are. "But she really is the brains with Tommy behind the family and you see the difference of how to rule. One from a male point of view, which is much more physical and violent and threatening, and one from a female point of view, which is just as physically violent and threatening, but is also psychological."Helen will be missed by all who knew her and her Peaky Blinders family and fans.
Paul Anderson as Arthur Shelby Jr, Season 1-
Paul Anderson plays Arthur Shelby Jr. on the show, the eldest Shelby son. Having starred in The Revenant and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Paul is no stranger to a gritty drama. He said: "They're the most interesting roles to play: violent, brutal, dark characters. There's so much scope because you can do the obvious brutish kind of stuff, but then you can play the sort of different layers with a violent man. "There's a reason for that sort of behaviour and mentality. Men were hard men and if they weren't then they were left behind. It was a pleasure to play Arthur Shelby. Much better than playing the nice guy."
Sophie Rundle as Ada Thorne, Season 1-
Sophie Rundle portrays the only sister among the Shelby family - Ada, who secretly married Tommy's wartime friend, Freddie Thorne. Although Freddie passed away early on in the series, Ada has grown hugely as a character. "Everything that you imagine about the 20s, the flapper girls and the bright young things, Ada kind of embodies a lot of that. She's part of this new generation with all this energy that's looking for a change after the First World War. So she's sort of wild and bright and full of energy."
Finn Cole as Michael Gray, Season 2-
The Shelbys' cousin Michael Gray is actually played by former Peaky star Joe Cole's real-life brother, Finn Cole. Particularly for Lizzie, when she's in the office, you can feel her stationery and flick through her personal papers. "Even those things, when you read the papers, the designers and props team have thought of every detail. The numbers in the books are all relevant to what Lizzie does. I'm blown away by the attention to detail."
Ned Dennehy as Charlie Strong, Season 1-
Charlie is the uncle of Tommy and his siblings, working at the dockyard and often helping out in their schemes alongside his assistant Curly - he is thought to be their mother's brother.Ned had a role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, Irish comedy TV series The Young Offenders, as well as Parade's End, Luther, Banished and Dickensian.

Of leaving the show, he told the Independent: "It was business as usual really, just wrapping what's been a fantastic period of my life. Because the shooting scene didn't require a lot of the main cast and because we have different crews each year it was a pretty low-key exit to be honest."I had other projects on and I felt it was the right time to go, really. So it was just a case of feeling like letting some of the other characters grow."Steven Knight added: "Sometimes it's to do with the character. Sometimes it's to do with... you know, Peaky is getting a huge amount of attention, in the States and here [in the UK], so our actors are being picked up for other things."When they get picked up for other things, we're not like the American system where you tie the actor in for five series from the beginning and they can't leave. All our people are free to leave whenever they want. We wouldn't have it any other way, but we have to factor that in."
Annabelle Wallis as Grace Shelby, Season 1-3 & 5

Interestingly, I've always found it odd that I haven't had an opportunity to quite play this character in my relatively lengthy career. "It leaves me wanting a bit more but it's really fun to embrace. Of joining the cast, Aidan said: "I take things quite literally. The name is quite big and sounds like some kind of a showman, which he is in his way, a larger-than-life figure. In the case of Aberama, I think it's quite important the way the other characters react in such aghast to the idea that they're going to roll this guy in."
Charlie Murphy as Jessie Eden, Season 4-5
Charlie Murphy joined Peaky Blinders in series four as Jessie Eden, based on a real-life person of the same name - a support of the Communist cause and a union convenor who Tommy takes as a lover to manipulate her. She enjoys his company, and being exercised in some way by another great mind."Charlie revealed to Digital Spy in 2021 that she would not be returning to Peaky Blinders for season 6, and although the reason for her departure was not discussed, she said a spin-off about Jessie Eden would thoroughly interest her: "I just think she was an incredible woman, and she's a bit of a spy. There's so much. I mean, you could make a TV series about her for sure."
Is Peaky Blinders a true story?
Yes - of sorts. The Peaky Blinders themselves were a real-life gang started in the early 1890s, led by a man named Thomas Gilbert who quite frequently changed his last name. However, it's unclear whether the name Shelby had anything to do with it.
It's also unclear how much of the show is based on reality, and how much is based on old stories - and how much of the old stories were real.
Creator Steven Knight said, "The reason it came to me was that my parents grew up in Birmingham in the 20s. My mum, when she was nine years old, was a bookie’s runner; they used to use kids to take bets because it was all illegal. My dad’s uncle was part of the Peaky Blinders. It was reluctantly delivered, but my family did give me little snapshots, of gypsies and horses and gang fights and guns, and immaculate suits.
"One of the first stories that inspired me was of my dad when he was a little kid, sent to deliver a message. There was a table, covered in money and guns, surrounded by blokes, beautifully dressed, drinking beer from jam jars. You didn’t buy glasses. You only spent money on clothes."
What does Peaky Blinders mean?
There's some discrepancy over the real origin of the gang's name. It is thought that the name comes from the gang members surreptitiously stitching razors into their flat caps, which could then be used as weapons. However, Gillette was the first company to introduce the first replaceable razors in the US in 1903, and they first became available in 1908 in the UK.
Historian and criminal expert John Douglas thinks this is the truth of the matter, and says that members of the gang with razors sewn into their hats would often headbutt their victims to potentially blind them. Alternatively, they might have slashed the foreheads of victims so that blood would pour into their eyes and cause temporary blindness.
But Birmingham historian Carl Chinn reckons it's more to do with the way that the gang dressed. He told the Birmingham Mail, "Fashionably dressed, they were named after the weapon they used in fights: the peaks of their flat caps into which had been sewn safety razors and which were slashed across the foreheads of their opponents, causing blood to pour down into their eyes and blind them.
"As for the razor blades? They were only beginning to come in from the 1890s and were a luxury item, much too expensive for the Peaky Blinders to have used. And any hard man would tell you it would be very difficult to get direction and power with a razor blade sewn into the soft part of a cap."
How many seasons of Peaky Blinders are there?
There are five series of Peaky Blinders so far, with a further two thought to be in the works. The first season aired in September 2013, season two came out in October 2014, series three aired in May 2016 and season four was released in November 2017. Season five aired on BBC One in August 2019.
Is Peaky Blinders on Netflix?
Seasons one to four are currently available to stream on Netflix. Unfortunately, they've been taken off BBC iPlayer, and they're not available on NOW TV either. You can stream them on Amazon Video, but there's a fee attached.
Will there be a season 6 of Peaky Blinders?
Show creator Steve Knight is pretty sure there will! Back in January 2019, Steven said that at this point, the characters are "writing themselves."
He told Slate, "I’m about to start writing season six now and if all the wheels fall off, or it goes horribly wrong, there’s probably people that will say something. But at this moment, it has its own logic and momentum. Right now, it feels as if the characters are just writing themselves.
"Peaky is a very personal thing for me because it’s based on stories that I was told as a kid by my parents. At the very beginning, I tried to have other writers involved but it just didn’t work.
"There’s no writers' room, or any other writer involved. I write everything from beginning to end. Maybe it’s just me not being able to let go of something, especially with Peaky. I can’t let it go."
He also spoke out about the possibility of a seventh season, telling the Birmingham Press Club, "We are definitely doing six and we will probably do seven. After series four it went mad. We've talked to Cillian Murphy and he's all for it, and the rest of the principal cast are in for it. I wasn’t supposed to say anything about it, but I don’t mind talking about things."
However, after the 2018 BAFTA TV Awards, Steven told Digital Spy that a seventh season would most likely mark the end of the show, saying, "My ambition is to make it a story of a family between two wars, so always I’ve wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939.
Speaking at the world premiere of season 5 in Birmingham, Steven confirmed to press that there are at least two more seasons of the show confirmed after season 5, meaning that we'll definitely be seeing a season six and seven!
Adding that they'll both be filmed entirely in Birmingham, Steven said, "Birmingham is the epicentre for the show and it means so much to me to come back here year after year and start the series with a bang."
Joe Godwin, Director of BBC Midlands, agreed that Birmingham was an important place for the Blinders, and added that it was the perfect place for the premiere, "BBC Birmingham is so excited to be hosting the world premiere of Peaky Blinders - it's a real fan-favourite across the Midlands.
"It's a brilliant event and screening which showcases one of the most popular drama series on the BBC ever right here in the heart of Birmingham!"
Stephen Graham has also been confirmed to appear in an upcoming season of Peaky Blinders. Line of Duty star Stephen, who is also well-known for his role as Andrew 'Combo' Gascoigne in the This Is England franchise, has been confirmed to join the show very soon.
Blinders creator Steven Knight spoke out on the Obsessed with... Peaky Blinders podcast, referring to fan speculation that Stephen could once again portray Al Capone, who he played in Boardwalk Empire.
Confirming that it would happen - but not for the upcoming fifth season - he said, "We're proceeding with that, but not for this series. Not Al Capone – I didn't want to go west. Because it's a minefield once you go into Chicago gangsters. I refer to him last series, but I didn't want to go into that.
"The amount of people who have come to us wanting to be in it is quite astonishing, and really good people. So what I've tried to avoid before is turning it into a spot the celebrity – you know, because I think it's quite distracting sometimes."
He added, "But someone like Adrien Brody is a great actor – obviously, you want to put them in it. But I think now we're coming to the final two series, I'm going to relax and open the gates a bit because there's some amazing people who want to be in it, and I think why not."
Where was Peaky Blinders filmed?
Although Peaky Blinders is set predominantly in Birmingham, not much of the show is actually filmed there. Tommy's Uncle Charlie's yard is filmed at the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, as well as the Canal Street Bridge and other moments. You can read about them here.
The BBC confirmed that series one was filmed in Birmingham, Bradford, Dudley, Leeds, Liverpool and Port Sunlight, and also revealed that a lot of sets were built specifically for the show in Liverpool, where most of the filming is done.
Much of series two was filmed in Manchester, with Production Designer Grant Montgomery telling i news, "I remember thinking Victoria Baths could give it a really good look. One of the baths had timber over it, so we put sawdust down on top."
Where is the Peaky Blinders pub?
In the show, the Peaky Blinders frequent their local pub The Garrison quite often, and have a great deal of influence over the owner, Harry Fenton. In series two, Tommy buys the pub for his brother Arthur, and from then on they own it.
It is based on a real-life pub called The Garrison Tavern in Small Heath, where the real Peaky Blinders went.
Are the Peaky Blinders Irish?
According to reports online, the real-life Peaky Blinders had English, Irish and Gypsy roots. On the show, the Shelby family have Gypsy blood, with Aunt Polly hailing from a Gypsy Queen. They also occasionally speak Romany on the show to each other. The Shelby patriarch, Arthur Shelby Snr, was played by Scottish actor Tommy Flanagan with an Irish accent, so it's thought that they have Irish ancestry.
When is the Peaky Blinders music festival?
There was an official Peaky Blinders festival to celebrate the premiere of the show's fifth season! Although fans of the show put an unofficial festival together last year, it wasn't approved by show bosses, and they decided to do one for real this year.
Show creator Steven Knight co-curated the festival, which took place in Digbeth on 14th and 15th September this year, and featured live music from bands who have contributed to the soundtrack across five stages.
Nadine Shah, Primal Scream, Slaves, Mike Skinner, and Anna Calvi are all on the list of performers, and there'll also be 200 actors recreating scenes from the show.
Steven Knight released a statement which read, "It will be a festival of live music, performance, poetry, immersive theatre and experiences which will celebrate the swagger of the men and women who walked these same Digbeth streets one hundred years ago.
"Along with the music line-up, we have the world-famous ballet Rambert performing a specially written and choreographed Peaky Blinders ballet. There will be fashion shows, street food, pop ups and bars including a reimagined Garrison Tavern.
"We will be celebrating in Birmingham style and everyone from around the world is invited. Expect the unexpected, expect 1919 to come crashing into 2019 and, be assured, everything is officially by order of the Peaky Blinders."
