Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody

Following the amazing success of Bohemian Rhapsody, the biographical film about Freddie Mercury, which received many awards, a sequel to Queen’s blockbuster is being seriously discussed. The feature film, which was released last year, has won many awards including, four Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and two British Academy Film Awards.

Will there be a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel?

According to a filmmaker close to the band, Austrian film producer and director, Rudi Dolezal, who has helmed several Queen music videos including ‘These Are the Days of Our Lives’ and ‘The Show Must Go On’, he believes the band and their management are lining up a follow-up to the movie.

Commenting on the band’s legendary long-term manager Jim Beach, who also produced Bohemian Rhapsody, Rudi told PageSix, "I’m sure he plans a sequel that starts with Live Aid."

Tantalisingly, he added that the follow-up film is now “being heavily discussed in the Queen family.”

If Rudi's comments are indeed true, it would come as no surprise as Bohemian Rhapsody was a gargantuan box office smash raking in an estimated £663 million globally against a budget of £44 million.

Despite initially receiving a lukewarm response from critics and only holding a 61% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Bohemian Rhapsody has scooped multiple awards including four Oscars (including Best Actor for Rami Malek), two BAFTAs and two Golden Globes.

How did they make Live Aid in Bohemian Rhapsody?

Released digitally and on Blu-ray, DVD & 4K Ultra HD earlier this year, the home release of Bohemian Rhapsody comes with an extended 22-minute sequence of Live Aid.

Every song and move from Queen’s historic set at Wembley Stadium in July 1985 was replicated for Bohemian Rhapsody, however only part of it made the final cut of the cinematic release.

Has Brian May spoken about a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel?

Yes, Brian May has spoken about a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel. According to Cinema Blend, the Queen guitarist revealed his thoughts on a sequel saying, "No. I think there's a natural culmination there. And that has pretty much always been the case, from the earliest scripts. We felt that was the pinnacle -- despite what some people have said in the press, who know f--k-all about it.

"Somebody who shall be nameless said, 'Oh, they're going to portray Freddie dying in the middle of the movie, and then the rest of it is gonna be about life without Freddie.' Well, complete bulls--t. This is all about Freddie, and I think Live Aid is a good point to leave it. Who knows, there might be a sequel [laughs].

Speaking to Newsweek earlier this year, the Queen guitarist said he was blown away and “delighted” by the success, “Nobody expected it to be that huge. We thought it would do quite well. We didn't expect it to be a record-breaking blockbuster.

He also praised Rami Malek for his “colossal” performance as Freddie Mercury, saying: “What an incredible performance he gives. He just became Freddie.”

Freddie's sister Kashmira has also now spoken about the possibility of a sequel saying, "I wasn’t too surprised by the success of the movie, because the subjects of the movie are Freddie Mercury, together with Queen and their music," she told Nottingham Post. "And that will always be a formula for success."

Although she has revealed that the the portrayal of herself and her parents in the film wasn't entirely accurate, she said she is a fan of the film saying, "I thought it was very tastefully done, I thought Freddie was portrayed accurately in most parts, with his character and mannerisms."

When asked about a sequel, she said, "I haven’t heard from the management about a sequel. Only time will tell."

What will the Bohemian Rhapsody sequel be about?

Although a Bohemian Rhapsody sequel has not yet been confirmed, there are plenty of rumours over what a sequel could be about, these include, Freddie Mercury's final years, the formative years of Freddie Mercury and how Queen continued following the death of Freddie Mercury.
