Unlike us, you might not have found the time to have binged watched the whole series of Netflix show 13 Reasons Why yet, but you definitely haven't escaped all the hype. It's literally everywhere and we're 100% addicted. Sorry not sorry.
However, it's no secret that the show has been subject to a great deal of criticism from a few sectors of society, including mental health charities, for its depiction of suicide and sexual assault.
The show's producer, the only and only Selena Gomez, has now responded to the recent criticism.
Selena told Associated Press: "We wanted to do it justice.
"It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing," she added, describing the show as "a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story."
She also added that she's "not surprised" that the show has attracted a backlash and that it was going to happen "no matter what."
And in a chat with E! at We Day, Selena added that she wanted the show to come across “in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused - in a way that they would talk about it because it's something that's happening all the time."
Selena hasn't been the only one to defend all the criticism, a Netflix spokesperson recently released a statement that touched upon every aspect of the backlash: "From the onset of work on 13 Reasons Why, we have been mindful both of the show's intense themes and the intended audience. We support the unflinching vision of the show’s creators, who engaged the careful advice of medical professionals in the scriptwriting process".
