Simon Cowell has vowed to take the X Factor back to basics after contestants were forced to beg for survival during last week’s live judges’ houses.
During the first live episode last Saturday, judges Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon chose the first two of their three acts for the live finals before the remaining hopefuls gave reasons as to why they should go through to the next round.
However, Simon had no idea this was going to happen and wasn’t impressed with how it came across on screen.
He told the Daily Mirror: “As far as this week goes, it’s back to basics. Last weekend I was like, ‘Woah.’ It was too crazy.
“I had just been back a day from America and was jet-lagged. I walked on to the show and hadn’t a clue what was going on half the time.
“Then I realised, ‘Oh my God, they’ve been asked to beg – I can’t do this.’ So we stopped it on day two.
“Uncomfortable? It was horrific, so that’s scrapped 100%. It was shambolic.
“It certainly gave me a kick up the a**e and made me look at this week.”
Simon doesn’t know who made the decision to make the acts pitch to the judges for survival but he thought it was so bad he even had a word with the contestants during a break in the live show.
He continued: “I said, ‘Look, I had no idea this was going on but please don’t beg – just make a clear point why you should be there.’ Then at the end of the show I said, ‘We can’t do that.’”
The first of the live finals of the X Factor airs tonight on ITV1 at 8pm.
