Way back in 1986, Top Gun captured the attention of millions around the world as we got to see Tom Cruise take on the role of the iconic Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell. Now, 33 years later, we get our first look at Tom Cruise reprising his role of Maverick back in action, this follows the first still from Maverick being released last year.
Now, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has shared the first-look trailer and it has us super excited. Maverick is now a flight instructor, but he is called back into action by Goose's son Bradley, played by Miles Teller.
The sequel to Top Gun was first confirmed back in 2017 when film producer, Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of him alongside Tom Cruise saying, 'Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2. ' This initial tweet caused a huge amount of excitement, and was later followed by Tom Cruise confirming it in an interview with Australian TV.
While on Australian talk show Sunrise Tom dropped the exclusive news saying, "It’s true. I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year."
"It is definitely happening. You are the first people that I’ve said. You asked me, and so I’m telling you, it is going to happen."
In 2018, fans then had the chance to see the first look of Maverick, Tom Cruise tweeted a photo of himself as the iconic character saying, '#Day1'. The photo showed the actor facing away from the camera and looking towards a fighter jet, holding a helmet with his name on it. The actor also tagged film producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance, the film studio behind the production.
It was then confirmed that Val Kilmer will also be reprising his role as Iceman.
A few months later the lead actor confirmed that Maverick's release would be delayed by almost a year, with a new date of 26th June 2020. The additional time allows for the filmmakers to work out the flight sequences using new technology and planes and from the look for the first trailer it looks like it's worth the wait.
