Last night marked the first day of the rest of our Summer because LOVE ISLAND finally returned to ITV2! It was the night we had been waiting for ever since Cara De La Hoyde and Nathan Massey were crowned winners in last year’s series and it sure did not disappoint.
Only one episode in, we’ve already seen bitching, wandering eyes, the first islander kiss, a man stealing twist AND the first recoupling scandal of the series. Basically, Love Island is LIT.
Twitter users, including fellow reality TV stars, did not disappoint last night either, giving a hilarious running commentary of the opening episode including a whole lotta funny memes and piss taking. (Because you can’t really watch a TV show in the 21st century without debating it on Twitter, can you?)
Here’s some of the best Twitter reactions to Love Island episode 1 (warning: spoilers ahead!):
1. Marcel? In Blazin’ Sqaud? Don’t think he mentioned it…
31-year-old music producer Marcel Somerville sure made an entrance on last night’s Love Island. He was the first boy to enter the villa and no one stepped forward for him, what an absolute PAR! (poor Marcel).
He then ended up being coupled with the gorgeous blond bombshell Olivia and, in an attempt to impress her, decided to tell her he was in 10-man band Blazin’ Squad back in the day. It was clear Olivia couldn’t remember who Blazin’ Squad were, but he later revealed his big blazin’ ‘secret’ to Jessica as well, who had a much more excited reaction.
As well as this, Marcel (aka Rocky B) made subtle hints to his fellow islanders during a toast, saying “It’s blazin’ hot” and referring to his band bombshell as “squad news” – LOL.
Twitter then went crazy with everyone cringing, treating us to a whole host of memes about how Marcel just can’t seem to let the Blazin’ Squad thing go, comparing him to last year’s Zara Holland who similarly tended to boast a lot about her Miss Great Britain title, despite suggesting she wanted to keep it a secret. (We don’t blame Marcel TBH, Crossroads was a tuuuune).
2. The Jess, Dom and Montana love triangle
Student Montana Brown revealed last night that she knows surprise islander Jessica Shears, as they previously dated the same guy at the same time, openly admitting she was the “side chick” - #awks. With that, the first Love Island scandal and love triangle of the series was born…
After a seemingly nice chat between the two to smooth things over, Jessica said: “Part of me does think ‘I was there first and you sort of got in the way’ so I don’t know how vindictive I’m feeling yet. I feel like I owe her no loyalties”, suggesting she would like to couple up with Montana’s man, Dominic Lever.
Dom proceeded to reassure Montana that he didn’t want Jessica to pick him to couple up, but when (surprise, surprise) Jessica gave us TV gold by choosing Dom, Montana moaned “I’m so f_cking p_ssed off” and Dom appeared disappointed.
Twitter users then both defended and slammed Jessica’s actions, saying things such as:
People also teased Dom, suggesting he actually WANTED to be recoupled with Jessica. To be fair, what’s a guy to do when two hot girls are fighting over him?

3. Sam Gowland is dead ringer for these familiar faces…
Let’s hope 21-year-old Sam is more like Joey Essex than Robbie Rotten and gives us a creepy sick series!
4. Kem Cetinay certainly wasn’t SHORT of attention
Essex lad and hairstylist to the stars Kem revealed last night that he is just 5”7 ½ ; cue the short jokes… Including this one from TOWIE’s Chris Clark:
Fellow TOWIE boy Liam Gatbsy also got involved with the Twitter jokes, comparing Kem and Chloe to snakes for coupling up even though Chloe had dated Kem’s best mate (SCANDAL!):
Chloe can’t seem to win with these Essex boys recently, can she?
The jokes didn’t stop there though, with people also comparing Kem to Shrek’s Lord Farquard. (Jesus, give the guy a break, will you?)
5. TOWIE hunk Chris Clark defends brother Jon Clark after those dating allegations about Chloe
It’s no secret that there’s been major dramz surrounding Love Island newbie Chloe Crowhurst already, with Love Island original and TOWIE star Jon Clark claiming they were in a relationship just before Chloe entered the villa.
Adding fuel to the fire, Jon’s younger brother Chris made his feelings about Chloe on the opening show verrrry clear on Twitter last night, seemingly taking joy from Chloe being pied by new islander Sam:
6. Nathan Massey thinks Olivia Attwood needs to brush up on her geography skills…
After motorsport grid girl Olivia asked Marcel whether Ibiza is in Spain during last night’s Love Island episode, last year’s winner and top joker of the villa Nathan stated he would’ve dealt with that comment by pushing Olivia in the pool
7. Olivia Buckland keeps a firm hand on her man Alex Bowen after that comment from Montana
Last year’s Love Island runner up, Essex girl Olivia Buckland gives a firm BUCK OFF to Montana after she seemed to show an interest in Olivia’s fiancé Alex, whom she met on the show last year.
In her VT, Montana said: “Because I have been brought up in that middle class circle I’d quite like to meet that rough and ready boy. He might be a scaffolder from Birmingham, you never know!”
It’s safe to say Olivia was NOT happy as her own bae Alex was in fact a scaffolder from Birmingham when he first joined Love Island. The claws are out…
Alex seemed to be in shock as well, tweeting:
Come on now, there’s plenty of Brummie scaffolders to go around, right?
8. Original pocket rocket Kady McDermott warns of ‘fake’ contestants this year
Kady, who several Twitter uses compared to newbie islander Amber Davies, expressed her doubts about the reality of this year’s Love Island. Kady’s fellow Love Island 2016 roomie Olivia then agreed with her, suggesting she thinks there may be a LOT of game playing to bag that £50 grand prize.
