The 2018 John Lewis Christmas advert was released this morning featuring singer, songwriter and all round superstar, Sir Elton John, so we thought it was the perfect time to take a look back at the Christmas adverts John Lewis have released over the years...

2007 John Lewis Christmas advert - Shadows

Back to the first John Lewis Christmas advert, 'Shadows' and it's hard to believe it was so long ago!

In this advert we see people stacking items together in a plain white room with a shadow building on a wall. It's not clear what it is until a child runs in and throws glitter over the piece, bringing the picture to life.

2008 John Lewis Christmas advert - From Me To You

Set to the Beatles 'From Me To You' (covered by employees) the Christmas video of 2008 shows people being paired with present ideas - the thought being that if you know the person well, you're bound to find the right present.

2009 John Lewis Christmas advert - Sweet Child Of Mine

It's all about children in this advert as they're opening gifts for adults like kitchenware, big slippers and adult size handbags. The tagline is simply 'remember how Christmas used to feel? Give someone that feeling'.

2010 John Lewis Christmas advert - A Tribute to Givers

It's one we can all relate to - the struggle of wrapping an awkward shaped present because you know they'll love it.

In this Christmas advert, to Ellie Goulding's cover of 'Your Song', we see people struggling to wrap and hide all sorts of gifts. Not forgetting animals either - as a boy leaves the warmth of the house to hang a stocking outside for his dog.

2011 John Lewis Christmas advert - The Long Wait

We all know that feeling when Christmas feels like it's taking forever to finally arrive.

In the 2011 advert a little boy is opening his advent calendar day by day, looking impatient, presumably waiting for Santa to come.

But when the big day arrives, he runs past his own presents and leans into the wardrobe to fetch a messily wrapped package... which he's waited all month to give to his mum and dad.

2012 John Lewis Christmas advert - The Journey

In this video, a little girl builds a snowman and a snow lady but looks disappointed when the snowman's gone by morning.

But he hasn't melted, he's decided to go on his own journey through forests and fields and across mountains, all to buy his snowlady a special Christmas gift, with Gabrielle Aplin singing the soundtrack.

2013 John Lewis Christmas advert - The Bear and the Hare

In 2013 we saw a Disney-style advert about two unlikely friends, a bear and a hare.

The hare leaves a Christmas present for the bear when he wakes up from hibernation and he's delighted when he sees Christmas for the first time, with all the animals around the tree.

If that doesn't make your bottom lip wobble Lily Allen's cover of 'Somewhere Only We Know' will.

2014 John Lewis Christmas advert - Monty the Penguin

This year's advert saw Monty playing with a little boy but then wanting to fall in love.

2015 John Lewis Christmas advert - Man on the Moon

Appropriately set to a cover of Oasis' 'Half the World Away', a little girl is looking at the moon when she spots a elderly man living there, alone.

Everyday she returns to her telescope and decides to try everyway possible to reach out to him at Christmas.

2016 John Lewis Christmas advert - Buster the Boxer

The advert tells the story of Buster the boxer, looking enviously on the neighbourhood wildlife having fun on a trampoline, whilst he's stuck inside.

As daughter Bridget goes to bed for Santa’s arrival, her dad can be seen carefully building a brand new trampoline in the back garden. When Christmas morning strikes, Bridget excitedly runs outside to try her new toy, only for Buster to beat her to it…

2017 John Lewis Christmas advert - Moz the Monster

Moz is living under Joe's bed and the two form a friendship and play together every evening. However staying awake through the night starts to take its toll on Joe, who can hardly keep his eyes open during the day. For Christmas, Joe receives the perfect gift of a night light which helps him finally get some peace and quiet from Moz, and a good night’s sleep. Just as you think the ad has come to a close, Joe turns the light back off and hears the familiar rumblings of his friend and is reminded that he can bring Moz back any time he thinks of him.

2018 John Lewis Christmas advert - The Boy and the Piano

The advert titled, 'The Boy and the Piano', features Sir Elton John playing his hit 'Your Song' and how it's evolved over time. 'Your Song' was first released nearly 50 years ago and proves to be a timeless classic in the heartwarming Christmas advert that aims to spread the message that 'Sometimes a gift isn't just a gift'.
