The X Factor: Celebrity kicked off last night (12th October) and saw a host of famous faces not usually known for singing attempt to impress judges Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh in order to progress to the live shows and eventually win a record contract.

The first act to take to the stage at Simon’s Malibu home were The Islanders, a super group made up of Love Island 2018 stars Wes Nelson, Samira Mighty, Zara McDermott and Eyal Booker.

The Islanders performed a rendition of Shawn Mendes’ hit There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back, shocking viewers with their impressive vocals.

Viewers were particularly wowed by Wes Nelson, who added his own rap verse to the song, and took to social media to shower him with praise.

“I'm sorry but I can't get over how good Wes is at everything!! His personality, singing, ice skating and rapping!! He's gonna go far in life,” wrote one fan.

Another added: “Sorry but can we just take a moment to talk about how well Wes Nelson can rap, and Samira can sing??? I’m still shook.”

A third gushed: “Is there anything Wes can’t do?”

The judges also heaped praise on The Islanders, with Simon telling them: “You can all sing!”

“Yeah, and they look great,” added Louis, while Nicole told them they had “potential.”

Another act to impress was The Chase quizzer Jenny Ryan (aka The Vixen) who belted out Queen’s Somebody To Love and received a standing ovation from the judges.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for former Strictly Come Dancingstar Brendan Cole and Hollyoaks actor Jeremy Edwards.

The pals performed as a duo but failed to wow the judges, leaving them clearly unhappy with the critique.

“They were really mean and that’s upsetting because it’s like okay we’re trying. I don’t know that was a bit mean. I don’t like people being mean,” Jeremy told his fellow contestants after the performance.

It wasn’t the first time he’s hit out at the judges either after previously calling labelling their criticism as unnecessary.

Speaking to The Mirror, Jeremy said: “This was just me, I can’t speak for Brendan on this… Brendan is more used to it than I am.

“They edited down quite a lot of what Howie [Mandel] said and I’m gonna be completely honest with you, I don’t think a lot of it was necessary.”

Brendan added: “Luckily Nicole and Simon were really nice to us,” with Jeremy addin:, “And Louis was nice. At one point I wanted to say, ‘dude, you’re not even a judge so can you shut up. It only matters what these three say'."
