Self-care will forever be our favourite hobby but we appreciate that recharging and putting yourself first looks different for everyone. Each week, we'll be asking the celeb lot to share their ideal self-care Sunday routines, the hard-working beauty products they recommend to their friends and which TV show they're currently binging…
This week it's all about rising broadcaster and presenter Joelah Noble. As well as landing presenting roles for GRM Daily, Premier League's digital series Uncut, and Amazon Prime's Kitchen Table Face Off, she recently co-hosted the Lionesses Live show for the Women’s Euros this summer with Josh Denzel. Quite frankly, a highlight of summer 2022.
The star also presented the hit dating show Are You The One?, which aired on MTV and Paramount+ for the first-ever UK series last summer. Oh, the drama! We're still talking about it.
Joelah chats exclusively to heat about her self-care Sunday routine, make-up favourites for filming and the books that have changed her outlook...
On self-care
What does the ultimate self-care Sunday routine look like for Joelah?
"I'm assuming that my room is already cleaned because I cleaned it on Saturday" Joelah laughs. "So when I wake up I'll draw the curtains because I love light. The mornings are obviously quite dark at the moment, so I'll take advantage of any tinkle of light that I can get. I like to do a little bit of meditation, nothing too deep, just being in that present moment. Just breathe in a bit and really appreciating the day.
"I'll be laying in bed, just breathing and trying to note things in my head that I'm really grateful for and setting my intentions for the day. I also like to journal every morning and write down any dreams that I've had or any lingering feelings.
"I love putting on my diffuser and NEOM has some of my favourite oil blends. There's one called Moment of Calm and it smells so nice. I also put on this amazing playlist that is full of proper old-school stuff from when my mum was in her teens, like that sort of music mixed in with my chilled R&B, soul, jazz vibe.
"I don't want to do any work on a Sunday, I don't even want to cook on a Sunday! I'll light some candles, I'm a candle fanatic. I might put a hair mask on and I'll do a face mask, too."
On conditioning treatments
Turns out, Joelah is a big fan of hair treatments and her conditioning routine is screenshot-worthy.
"For hair products, I love the brand Briogeo. It's really good for curly hair textures. I love their Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Hair Mask. I have a heated cap thing that you plug it in. So, I'll put the mask on, then I'll put clingfilm over my hair. Then I'll put a shower cap over it. Then I'll put the heat cap on and leave for 30 minutes and maybe add some oil to my scalp. That's a proper good deep condition."
Hair conditioning goals, if you ask us.
On make-up
What are the make-up must-haves Joelah swears by for filming?
"I'm really picky, so a lot of the time I do my make-up myself and I'll ask the make-up artist to do any touch-ups or to do my eyelashes because that is the stress!
"There's this foundation that I have been obsessed about and have been recommending to everyone. Instagram marketing got me! You basically take this quiz online and it sends you your perfect match and all these make-up artists and Instagram influencers rave about it. I took the quiz five times before I ordered it and oh my god, it was perfect. I always get compliments on my foundation, it's the Il Makiage Foundation. I use it when I'm filming and when I'm not filming as well. It's so buildable and doesn't go cakey. It's the sign of a good foundation when it just melts into your skin.
"I also love theFenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Concealer, it's a really great consistency. Il Makiage has a setting powder that I'll use over my concealer and it sets it so beautifully.
"There is a MAC Lip Liner in the shade 'Chestnut' that I can't go without. I love pairing it with the NYX Professional Makeup Butter Gloss in the shade 'Madeline'. The colour is so nice and I've not found a gloss I like better."
On becoming a presenter
"I actually worked a series of jobs that I absolutely hated. It was nothing personal to the jobs that I was in, it was all me. I just know that I had to do something creative. I built up the courage to do this online magazine which was dedicated to interviewing people and figuring out how they went from having something as a passion to their actual profession and they're making money and stuff with it. Because really, that's just what I wanted to do myself.
"I started that up and it probably got 300 views max, but it was a great way for me to practise, be comfortable in front of a camera, and produce my own stuff. That was my initial introduction to the presenting world. Then I started doing the GRM Daily weekly news, so that was great. Because it was a weekly thing I was working with autocue and I learned so much about the genre of music.
"I was born in London but raised in New York so I was very into hip hop and I wanted to be a rapper when I was younger. So coming to England and hearing garage music and grime, it was just a whole different world from what I was used to in terms of culture. From there I've done loads of other amazing jobs that was helping me become comfortable and confident as a presenter. I started doing a sneaker review show and that was my way of producing something on my own and showing people what I was into and being able to fully express my personality to the full extent without someone telling me what to do."
On life-changing books
What are the life-changing books that have transformed Joelah's outlook? Spoiler alert: there's three.
"For anyone on a self-love journey, The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle is a great book. I was avoiding this book for so long because it just sounds like a book on how to be productive and I've read enough of those! When I finally read it, I realised it was all about being in the present and how the present moment in different scenarios can really benefit you and how to use it to, to your power and to make you happy.
"There's another book called Becoming Supernatural by Dr Joe Dispenza. That's really good, but it's quite intense. That book focuses on meditation and how to use it. It's really scientific and shares lots of trials and studies.
"There's also a fantasy fiction book and it's by a Japanese writer called Murakami. The book is called Kafka on the Shore and it just feels like self-exploration through this little boy's life, and also this old man's life. It's a really lovely book to read."
On daily wellness habit
"I think that has to be journaling and writing down the things that I'm grateful for. I think it's so easy, especially in today's society with social media and everyone's opinions being thrown at you and forced down your neck, it's really easy to forget to be in that present moment and to fully appreciate the things that you have.
"During the pandemic, it was so stressful for so many people and for me included. It was really scary, but I've got a roof over my head and I've got heating and I've got food and a lot of people don't have that. So I'm gonna pray for those people and also be grateful for my life and for my situation because it can always it could always be worse and even if that's the case, you just deal with it."
