Self-care will forever be our favourite hobby but we appreciate that recharging and putting yourself first looks different for everyone. Each week, we'll ask the celeb lot to share their ideal self-care Sunday routines, the hard-working beauty products they recommend to their friends and which TV show they're currently binging…
This week it's all about Tammy Hembrow. With over 20 million followers across her platforms, Tammy is an entrepreneur, fitness model, influencer, and mum and is loved for sharing daily snippets of her life.
She launched two very successful businesses - Tammy Fit and SASKI - in her twenties, despite also having three children, Wolf, Saskia and Posy. If there is something about Tammy Hembrow, she isn't afraid of hard work. 👏
After winning plenty of young entrepreneur awards, Tammy has penned everything she knows into her first book called, Show Up: Mindset, Motivation, and creating your dream life where she shares the lessons she's learned to help her balance everything and to 'show up' fully.
To celebrate her new book, Tammy chats exclusively to heat about her top tips on creating your dream life, her beauty favourites and the golden fitness tip she's learned recently...
On her book
So why did Tammy decide to write a book?
"I thought it was time. I’m approaching 30 and I’ve always had that dream. I’m an avid reader, I love reading, so it was sort of something that just made sense to me, and I was like ‘You know what, I’m going to be in my thirties soon, this is just something I really want to do!'
"One of my favourite things that I talk about is celebrating little life wins. I feel like life can get so hectic, especially when you’re building a business and doing things like that it can be really stressful and you can go through different struggles.
"I feel like it’s important to celebrate the smaller, little life wins. Celebrate little moments in everyday life and just celebrate things that other people would usually see as mundane, or like nothing to celebrate. I feel like life should be enjoyed and people should celebrate all the little things and all the little moments. Appreciate where you’re at, and celebrate the every day."
On creating her dream life
A big theme of the book is 'creating your dream life' so what's one of Tammy's favourite tips on achieving that?
"Obviously, everyone's dream life would look different for everyone. What I want in my life would look different to the person next to me and so on.
"It’s thinking about what you want in life and then also backing yourself, showing up for yourself, and believing that you can create that life. The first step to getting anything done, any action or any success is believing in what you can do and believing you can actually achieve it, because if you don’t think that you can, then you’re probably not likely to."
On navigating social media
Tammy's career is predominantly on social media, so how does she balance all that time online with taking care of her mental health?
"It can definitely be tough having so many eyes on everything you do. But, I think I’m good at switching off from it and sort of compartmentalising it. I like social media. I love sharing and I love showing my life and inspiring people and all of that, but I also remind myself that it’s not everything. But yeah, it can be a bit overwhelming sometimes.
"I definitely have a lot of time on my weekends when I’m not on my phone. Or if I do, like if I’m doing something cute with the fam or something I’ll set up my phone sort of in the corner to record or something and then just forget about it.
"I don't let it interrupt staying present and actually being in the moment. If it interferes with that, I’ll put the phone away, because my weekends are definitely like my family time, my downtime. I have a strict no-work rule on the weekends because I am so busy during my week."
On self-care
What does the ultimate self-care Sunday look like for the author?
"Mine would probably start with a swim in the ocean or a nice walk outside, something out in nature. I love swimming at the beach, so going down to the beach for a swim in the morning is like my perfect, relaxing, destressing morning. And then in the evenings, I love a movie night.
"I have a seven-step skincare routine at the moment because my sisters own a skin clinic and they have strictly put me on a strict plan of what to be using and what to be doing. So I have my skincare routine, I like to have a nice cup of tea, put on a movie, light some candles, and play some music, I love just doing nothing. That’s self-care for me, switching off and doing nothing."
On skincare
"The main products I’m using right now are a brand called DMK and my sisters’ got me on to it. It’s really good. I have a whole routine, there are so many steps in it. I literally have to call my sister and be like ‘Okay, which one do I use for what?’ But yeah, it’s literally just every type of cream for every product, and then there’s a spray and then there’s a serum and like everything!"
"I also love the Ole Henriksen PHAT Glow Mask. It makes my skin feel so good after. I’m obsessed with that one."
On budget beauty buys
"One of my favourite foundations actually, is from Rimmel London. It’s the Lasting Finish 35 Hour Foundation and it's so good I swear by it.
"I wear it whenever I know I’m going to be out all day and I’m not going to be able to touch up or I’m going to be doing lots of different things. I went to an event, and it was a really emotional event, I was crying and my make-up did not budge, it was amazing. It sits so nicely, and it’s just really, really good."
On her go-to lip combo
"I can’t live without lip liner. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lipliners, those are so good. You won’t catch me going anywhere without my lipliner. At the moment I'm loving the shade Foxy Brown and I use it with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Velvet in the shade Pure Hollywood.
"I'm a matte girly, I wish I was a gloss girl, but every time I wear gloss I end up switching straight back to matte!"
On daily wellness habits
"I definitely like to have some sort of movement in my day, I work out a lot. Five days a week I’m in the gym, and on the weekends I like to do some form of yoga or Pilates. I love meditation, and I think more people should meditate, meditating is amazing.
Then before bed and in the morning, I go through what I’m grateful for and things like that. I feel like you’re just setting yourself up for a good day when you do that."
On her current fitness goals
"At the moment, I'm just building strength really. I’ve been working a lot on my core, my core strength is super important to me, obviously because I’ve had three kids, and my stomach’s been through a lot! So my core is super important. I love doing ab work and that sort of stuff. I love Pilates at the moment too.
"Pilates and strength training complement each other so well, so I’ve been doing a lot of that. But yeah, basically, just getting stronger, building up my overall strength. I’m also working on my pull-ups and chin-ups, which is a big goal of mine. I’ve never really been able to do them and I can finally do them, so I’m working on building those up, which is good."
On fitness tips
What's a fitness tip Tammy wishes she knew sooner?
"I think maybe how important stretching is. I’ve been working a lot on my flexibility and I feel like being more flexible, helps so much in so many different areas. Being flexible just makes everything better. My muscles can get really, really tight and I used to sort of skip over stretching sometimes, and I wish I hadn’t. It’s such a game-changer."
On life-changing advice
What's a great piece of piece that the star lives by?
"Well, I always say one of my favourite quotes, I got it from my stepdad when I was younger. He said never complain. He said if there’s something to complain about, either change it, or, if you can’t change it then there’s no point in complaining. That's always stuck with me, and I always try and think about that. You either change the situation or there's no point in worrying and complaining about it."
