Self-care will forever be our favourite hobby but we appreciate that recharging and putting yourself first looks different for everyone. Each week, we'll be asking the celeb lot to share their ideal self-care Sunday routines, the hard-working beauty products they recommend to their friends and which TV show they're currently binging…
This week it's all about Vogue Williams, the Irish model and telly presenter who is a proud mum to Theodore, Gigi and Otto, who she shares with husband, Spencer Matthews. As a self-confessed fake tan addict, she also has her own cult tanning brand, Bare By Vogue which has been rated five stars online for being 'the best fake tan ever'. Here at heat, we can confirm it's ruddy brilliant.
If that's not enough, Vogue also co-hosts two MEGA podcasts, Spencer & Vogue and My Therapist Ghosted Me (with the hilarious Joanne McNally).
"Life is great, super busy!" Vogue shares to heat. "But I’m doing jobs I absolutely love doing. I’m excited about the work that I’m doing and the kids are in great form and all is well."
The star chats self-care routines, really great books and the words of wisdom she lives by...
On self-care
So what does a self-care day look like for Vogue?
"I wouldn’t say I’ve been very good at self-care recently! My favourite thing to do is go for facials. I will go to the end of the earth for a good facial. I just love it. I love sitting there. I love how my skin feels after it. I think for me that’s the ultimate treat, to have a really, really good facial. And, you know, at-home facials are amazing. All the sheet masks and stuff that you get work really, really well. So I would try and use a couple of them a week.
"But self-care, I’m going to try it today. I'm going to try and sit down for 45 minutes in the middle of the day because I never take a break in the day and just read my book. That has been a complete game changer for me over the last year because I used to love reading and then I just fell out of reading. And I was like, ‘I don’t have time because I have kids, I can’t do it. I don’t have time.’ And, actually, you do have time. I just don’t really watch very much TV anymore. But you get into a good book and you won’t want to watch TV. So at night, I literally go to bed and I read a book for ages and I just think it’s such a nice way to help you with your sleep. It’s really relaxing. So that’s kind of self-carey. I read my books.
"The books I read change all the time. I’m reading Adam Kay’s book at the moment, This is Going to Hurt and it’s so funny. I absolutely love him. I read a book about Greek mythology last week. I love a Colleen Hoover book. I have to take Colleen Hoover breaks. I’m like, ‘One Colleen Hoover, a different book, one Colleen Hoover, a different book…’ So romance ones I like, just ones that you can easily check out.
"Then I whack on my Bare by Vogue Face Tanning serum, that’s kind of why I look glowy [we can confirm Vogue looks very radiant on Zoom]. It's definitely in my top three Bare by Vogue products. It’s so good because I look so grey, because I never have my face in the sun. So I have this real grey face and a lovely grey sheen off it, almost blue sometimes. When I’m sitting reading, I’ll put on my serum and just do my whole nighttime routine. Double cleanse, serum on, lovely moisturiser on over it, nice lip balm and then I’m just settled for bed."
On tanning routines
"I’m a tad obsessed. You’ll never see me without tan on. I think it can honestly change how you feel. Actually, super time to say, I need to have a scrub. But I’ll tell you what I’m going to do today.
"So today I’m going to, we have an exfoliator glove, so if I want to do a quick turnaround I’ll get into the shower and use my exfoliator glove. I probably should have done it last night and I didn’t. And I’ll scrub my tan, scrub my skin, it just makes it really smooth. I use that glove about three times a week anyway just because it’s really nice for your skin. And then I’ll get out and I always put my tan on for the day. I’ll just wander around with tan on all day because I like the guide colour. You just look like you’re tanned for an extra day and then I wash it off before bed and that’s about it.
"I tan at least once a week. I use the serum probably three times a week. Just because, you know when you’re running out the door and if I’m going to drop the kids to nursery or something, I just put a cap on and I’ve just got the serum on my face. I kind of look like I’ve got a little bit of makeup on. When I tan every single week, it just makes me feel so much better about myself. I loved it for pregnancy. During pregnancy, I just would feel terrible and I’d put on a tan and it just instantly lifts you."
On wellness habits
"I train and I love training. I know it’s a weird thing to say, but I do, I love it. I train with my trainer, John, a lot. I really enjoy what we do. It’s like half an hour out of my day. I might go for a quick run as well. Or, I’m always out for walks in the park with the kids and I just really enjoy it. For me, that’s the ultimate self-care to look after your body. I’m not very good at meditating or anything like that so I try and say that my training is my meditative kind of zone for a while."
On fitness tips
"I love hearing about when people start getting into fitness, and my sister has just started getting into it with me. It takes six weeks for anything to catch on really and I think you might find the first six weeks hard but then after that you just start feeling so good about yourself. You feel like you look better, you move easier. Feeling fitter is just so helpful. If you wait six weeks, you’ll even notice a difference in your mood.
"For me, if I’m ever a bit anxious, I’ll just go get out of my head for a while, go for a run and it really can just alter your mood. It’s as much for your mind as it is for your body. I think if people are starting to get into it, stick with it and don’t push yourself. Don’t feel like you need to go to the gym for an hour, start easy. Go for a 20-minute walk, don’t feel pressurised.
"I use the Gymondo app as well. I think that’s great for people starting out because doing something like that at home, some people are nervous about being in a gym, and actually, now that I haven’t been in the gym for so long I love just working out at home when you don’t need much equipment. I think it’s a good way to get into it as well for people who don’t love the gym."
On skincare recommendations
"I just love anything to do with skincare. It’s the one thing where I love looking through products and I love looking through other people’s products. I’m loving Beauty Pie and I’m working with Beauty Pie.
"Before I worked with them, I always loved their stuff but they’re not in Ireland. I get into loads of trouble over that. But they have these little vitamin C capsule things and I love them because I get quite bad pigmentation. It doesn’t matter what you do, if you avoid the sun, if you have a hat on, some people still get it and I do. So I use a lot of Vitamin C.
"I also love the Medik8 C-tetra Serum. It kind of smells funny because it’s so potent, it’s proper Vitamin C. I do love the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream. I mean it goes everywhere on everyone. Honestly, one of my friends has dry eyes and they’d gone and gotten this cream from the doctor and it was a steroid cream. I was like, ‘try this’ and it actually got rid of it. I love a lip balm. If anyone ever wants to get me a present, get me a lip balm.
"I love our BarebyVogue Face Tanning Serum which is our first step into skincare because it’s got hyaluronic acid, it’s got vitamin E so you’re getting that glow but you also have other factors that are really good for your skin. And a good moisturiser and a really good SPF because I use SPF every single day without fail."
On budget beauty recommendations
"I always buy cheap mascara. I don’t spend a lot of money on mascara. I think all the ones like the Maybelline ones are really, really good. I really like theMaybelline Colossal Waterproof Mascara Black. Sculpted by Aimee has really great mascaras, too.
"I love a cheap lip balm. Someone got me a really expensive one from a really expensive brand and I was like ‘Oh my god!’ because I wouldn’t spend the money myself. They got it for me and it wasn't that good. I prefer a stick of Carmex, it's an amazing lip balm."
On make-up bag staples
Which products does Vogue swear by for everyday glam? Luckily for us, she's showing us her entire make-up bag contents via Zoom. Buckle in.
"I have these brushes by Sarah Keary they are amazing and they come in this whole bag which I always use. I love Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting powder It lasts a lifetime and everyone in the world has it. Also, the [Chanel Les Beiges Bronzing Cream {href='https://www.boots.com/chanel-les-beiges-bronzing-cream-cream-gel-bronzer-for-a-healthy-sun-kissed-glow-10328431?' target='_blank' rel='noreferrer noopener nofollow' class='add-referrer-link'}) which I've had for over a year, so it's a good buy. It's expensive but it does last a year.
"I do love a Refy brow. I love the Charlotte Tilbury Beauty Light Wand in Pinkgasm which is a really nice, glowy blusher. Charlotte Tilbury is amazing, so much of my make-up bag is Charlotte Tilbury. I’m loving the YSL Touche Eclat foundation I also love the Sculpted by Aimee Brighten Up Concealer because I’ve got such bad bags under my eyes and this stuff helps to get rid of them, which is always good.
"Revitalash is great fun, I love this stuff because I have such shitty little eyelashes. It does work but you have to be good. I’m going to leave that out because I haven’t used that in a while and I need to get back on it. I love this Beauty Pie lip liner because I love a really good nude and this one is Rummy Pink, it’s just a really nice nude.
"We have our BarebyVogue illuminator ), I use it all over my body. I literally fly through it, I always put it on. But you can actually use it on your cheeks and on your nose so I love it for that as well."
On podcast recommendations
"I don’t listen to that many podcasts because I do listen back to all of mine. So I listened back to My Therapist Ghosted Me and to Spencer and Vogue because I edit with the editors, just to make sure that it sounds the way we want it to sound. I do listen to about three hours of podcasts a week, just from my own. I recently listened to the Battersea Poltergeists. I love anything supernatural, so I really loved it.
"I did Kathy Burke’s podcast recently and she’s brilliant. It’s Where There’s A Will, There’s A Wake. You plan your whole funeral and I’ve listened to a few of them and they're very funny. Anything upbeat, I like."
On recording podcasts
"I love doing a podcast, I have to say. I love to get to just sit with Joanne [McNally]. Yesterday, we just couldn’t stop laughing. We over-record every week because we just end off going off on these tangents. And it’s the same with Spen, it’s just really nice to just sit. People should do that at home, write topics and just sit and have a chat with people. It’s such a nice thing to do."
On life-changing books
"I feel like every book does that for me. If somebody is just starting to read, I would say get Colleen Hoover’s It Ends With Us. It’s a really good one to start with
"The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid is an amazing book. There’s a John Boyne book called The Hearts Invisible Furies that I bawled at, I loved it so much. I still have it and I can’t wait to forget about it a little bit more so I can read it again.
"I’m reading Adam Kay’s book, which came out ages ago. I sat beside him at the Comedy Awards last year. I remember saying to my manager ‘That’s Adam Kay!’ I hadn’t read his book and I love it so much. I’ve been laughing away every night, it’s so brilliant. But in saying the way the doctors have to work, it’s just madness and I can see why he’s not a doctor anymore, it’s really hard."
On great advice
"I always think, 'if it wasn’t for you, It’ll pass you by' because in our industry you do miss out on work all the time and it’s just the nature of it. You can’t get every job you want. I never really let myself get caught up with that. I just think, ‘something else will come along.’ You can be a bit pissed off for a minute but then you just have to remember that’s not actually what’s meant for me."
