Orolay Women's Thickened Down Jacket Review

The Zara dress. The Amazon dungarees. Literally anything Holly Willoughby wears. There are certain pieces of clothing that command the attention of the internet each year, selling out instantly and creating waiting lists thousands of names long.

You might have heard of the Amazon coat - spotted on the likes of Emma Stone and influencers across the globe. It's so popular, it even has its very own Instagram account.

With thousands of reviews on Amazon, plus bagging the number one best-seller spot in its category, it seems that the Orolay Thickened Down Jacket isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

It's likely you'll have been introduced to the jacket that celebrities, influencers and regular folk like you and I, are utterly obsessed with. If not, let us give you a little background info.

Created by Chinese outerwear brand Orolay, what's now become affectionately known as the Amazon coat was first spotted in the Upper East Side in 2018. Loved by mums, business women, socialites, bloggers and, well, anyone with a pulse it seems, it soon gained cult status, reaching viral heights online thanks to a piece in New York magazine.

Since then, the coat's fan base has only grown, with reviewers dubbing it the 'best coat ever' and marvelling in the many compliments it begets them on a daily basis. But should you splash out and buy the £129.99 coat?

Orolay Coat Amazon

Rrp: $149.99

Price: $125.99

Available in 12 colours (four of which are shiny variants) and sizes XXS to 5XL, the Orolay coat has taken the internet, and the fashion world by storm.

Some might argue that it looks pretty similar to every other puffer-style coat out there. It's oversized, has a hood, has a 100% polyester lining/shell, with a filling of 90% white duck down and 10% feather. It comes in a number of stylish colours, a whole host of sizes, plus has plenty of pockets for all your stuff - but is it really that special?

So what do we think at heat?

Head of Content Amy Cooper owns the Orolay and here's what she thinks...

When London went into Tier 2 restrictions I realised I needed to make two purchases: an outdoor furniture set and a MUCH warmer winter coat now that our social lives were going outdoors. And now that we're heading into a second lockdown with only outdoor exercise to keep us busy (bye, gyms), I'm thrilled with the purchase.

I've had my eye on The Coat for a while. I saw the memes. I know Emma Stone has one. I'd been blown away by the thought of what I could do with all those pockets (reader, there are six!) And I'm here to tell you: believe the hype. It's warm. It's cosy. You won't ever need to carry a bag again. It's perfect for everything from walking to the supermarket to meandering through the countryside. It has a side zipper if you need to make things a little looser. It is, well, the saviour of lockdown 2.0.

What about sizing, you ask? I'm generally a size 12 and went for a medium and it's true to the size guide on Amazon. I can fit a jumper underneath perfectly (which, let's be honest, is essential now the weather's turned) and zip the sides up if I need to make things a little looser (at least, that's the plan for Christmas Day).

What do other reviews say?

According to reviews, it's a game-changer.

One happy customer called it "the perfect puffer", writing, "I love this coat, I wasn’t actually expecting to like it. I have worn a famous brand[ed] winter coat for years and have recently returned a premium coat for its quality compared to price. I am over the moon with this purchase. I was looking for a warm down-filled coat but wanted something a little different to a regular [puffer] coat. This coat is so well made, so cozy and has a brilliant hood. I would recommend this coat to anyone."

Another reviewer exclaimed, "I had read about the coat on various NYC websites. How it was the uniform for the Manhattan and Brooklyn school run. Comfortable and stylish, but cheap. And then my sister, a mom on the UWS, bought one. I trust her opinion, so when she told me she loved it, I bought one for myself. (But in a different color (sic) than her, obvi.)

"I love mine. It's like wearing a sleeping bag, it's so cozy and so warm. It keeps me warm on English country walks or when I'm in London for meetings. The pockets! So many pockets for all my stuff. The hood is massive. When it's up, I don't get any rain in my face. When it's down, it cradles my neck like a soft cushion."

"Women of Great Britain, listen to us (former) New Yorkers. Buy The Coat."

So there you have it. If you're looking for a coat that's super warm, looks great and will earn you the title of owning 'the coat', we'd say that you can't go far wrong with this one. The hype IS real, after all.

There are also a number of other styles available from Orolay, including a traditional puffer coat, one with a faux fur hood and a super long version, if that's more your thing.
