There are certainly no dull moments when you’re married to Wayne Rooney, as his long-suffering wife Coleen knows all too well. And last week, the couple were thrown into crisis once more when it was revealed Wayne’s football club Derby County is facing bankruptcy – meaning the Rooneys’ future could be at risk, as Wayne could lose his job.
And, understandably, Coleen is not happy, because she’s concerned by what it means for them and their four sons, Kai, 11, Klay, eight, Kit, five, and three-year-old Cass.
“When a crisis hits, Wayne tends to retreat, leaving Coleen to shoulder the responsibility and worry about how to work it out,” an insider tells heat. “The news of Derby’s financial troubles has been a huge stress to Coleen and she’s seriously worried about the family’s future. To the world, they may be millionaires, with nothing to worry about except more holidays, but their outgoings are huge. Their new house has cost millions, and they’re looking at spending another million before it’s finished. Then, there’s the upkeep – pool, maintenance, gardening, security, electricity – it adds up to about £15k a month easily. Coleen knows they’re very privileged and she’s grateful for that, but it’s all relative. Their lifestyle is not cheap.”
Derby County are currently facing financial ruin. They have been unable to pay their staff, and been deducted 12 points with the potential of more and could be relegated, meaning less TV money. It has also been revealed that Wayne has been helping Derby out financially by paying for accommodation, equipment and away travel. But, despite this, his first managerial job clearly hasn’t gone as well as he would have hoped.

At the peak of his career, the 35-year-old former England captain was earning £300k a week, so he and Coleen – who is currently in a high-profile and expensive court battle with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy – have grown used to a certain income. And while they’ll never be poor, we’re told there isn’t an endless supply of money.
“It’s the school fees, the holidays, the properties and so many other things they need to cover for years to come,” our insider says. “It’s not necessarily the balance sheet that is causing the stress – but more Wayne’s ability to earn at this level in the future. Wayne just shrugs his shoulders and says he’ll get another job, but Coleen is all too aware that this may be tougher than he thinks. He’s been trading on his past successes and talent as a footballer and thinks people will come to him, but it doesn’t really work like that.”

Although Coleen, 35, knows the situation at Derby is not Wayne’s fault, we’re told she feels that he could have managed the end of his playing career better.
“Because Wayne is struggling at Derby, his future is hanging in the balance – especially with the embarrassing boozing scandals and being pictured with girls,” we’re told. “He’s still a liability. Coleen feels he’s blown it, and they’ve had arguments about it. He was having a hard enough time dealing with his ‘demotion’ as it was and now this.”
The source adds, “For Coleen, it’s a nightmare – it’s one thing after another. She’s still dealing with the court case and that’s going to be a huge bill, too. It’s never-ending.”
