After 19 years of watching him from the sidelines, you’d be forgiven for thinking Coleen Rooney breathed a huge sigh of relief when husband Wayne recently announced his retirement from playing football. The former England captain is hanging up his boots for a career in management, and while Coleen is pleased he has a new focus and is very proud of him, she’s worried that not having the structure of playing could cause problems.
Wayne has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to be manager at Derby County, where he’s been a player-coach since 2019.
“This was the day Coleen had been dreading – she’s been feeling quite emotional and there have been tears. Her biggest fear is that since Wayne is no longer on a strict training session, he’ll go off the rails again,” our source explains.
“Playing football gave him a routine, and when he was on a break, that’s when he’d get into trouble. She’s scared that he won’t cope with being a manager, and that he’ll end up sliding off into ‘Wayne’s world’. She knows that not being a footballer is going to be a struggle for him, as it’s what’s defined his life since he was ten. While Wayne’s thrilled with his new role, it’s not the same buzz for him, especially as he can’t throw himself into training.”

It was also alleged that he lost £500,000 during a night at a casino, and was arrested for being drunk at an airport a couple of years ago. But they have put all that behind them, and Coleen is hoping they can get through this, especially as she has the stress of her legal battle with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy, and is due to have clear-the-air Zoom talks with her soon.
“Col’s seen it quite a lot – marriages falling apart after retiring as the man struggles with his self-esteem and no longer getting all the glory,” we’re told. “They’ve got a lot going on at the moment, including homeschooling the boys, and she’s concerned he could look for thrills elsewhere. It’s going to be a testing time.”
