Thanks to husband Wayne’s illustrious football career, Coleen Rooney has had a life many of us can only dream of. Luxury holidays, designer clothes, mega mansions and millions in the bank, she has made the most of being one of Britain’s most famous WAGs. And while she’s very proud of all her childhood sweetheart has achieved, she's not keen on the couple’s four sons following in his footballing footsteps.
Last month, the former England captain put a video of eldest son Kai at a football training session and all his followers were impressed with the 10-year-old’s skills, saying he will be as great a player as his dad. And while Wayne, 34, would love him – and other sons, Klay, six, Kit, four, and Cass, two – to play professionally when they’re older, Coleen, 33, isn’t so sure.
“While Coleen is very proud of Kai's football skills, she is also worried about all the pressure being put on the lad to follow in his dad's footsteps – and worries about him becoming a footballer as she's seen all that Wayne has gone through and can't help but not want that for her boy,” our insider explains. “Kai is obsessed with football, he always has a ball and hero worships his dad – but Coleen can't help but worry about it, and all the pressure it must put on him and of course what will happen if he's not good enough to make it. And that it will crush him. Especially now as all his brothers are the same, and all say they want to be footballers. The house is obsessed with it. Obviously, she will support her sons whatever they want to do but she does have her reservations and wants to protect Kai.”
Ever since Wayne shot to fame aged 16, he and Coleen have seen the tough side of football and the attention that comes with it. Although they’ve been married since 2008 – and together since they were teenagers – their relationship has been marred by Wayne’s behaviour. When they first got together, it was revealed Wayne had been visiting prostitutes, and when Coleen was pregnant with Kai, it was alleged he had a threesome with two prostitutes. She forgave him but when she was pregnant with Cass, he was arrested for drink driving, taking home party girl Laura Simpson. He has also been arrested for being drunk and had issues with gambling and while they’re now in a good place now Wayne's a player/coach for Derby County, their sons’ future is causing some tension.

“Coleen has seen the dark side of it and is trying to get Wayne to understand that it's not all glory,” we’re told. “She has tried to talk to him about it, but he's obsessed and would love to see his sons follow in his footsteps – and won't hear that rationale about what if they are good enough. He just thinks they should work harder then and practice more, which Coleen thinks is ridiculous. She knows there are way more disappointed try-hards than those who make it, just look at Wayne's brothers [his two brothers also played for Everton's youth team but failed to match Wayne's success] and how it makes them feel. She knows they've made millions, but she doesn't want it as careers for her boys – and wants Wayne to try and be reasonable about it too. She knows being a footballer can be amazing and give a fantastic lifestyle, but she would just prefer her boys to do something else.”

Coleen – who got 10 GCSEs before dropping her A-levels because of the media opportunities that came her way – loves the boys being sporty but wants them to all work hard on their education, so they have something to fall back on if they don’t make it as footballers.
“She really tries to impress on them the importance of school and learning and wants all her boys to go to university and to get some sort of professional career,” the source adds. “Wayne of course takes it as criticism, and accuses her of looking down on everything that has given them this good life. It's an ongoing clash they have – it's just Coleen knows all four boys can't realistically make it and doesn't want any of their hearts broken, whereas Wayne can't see why it's not possible. Overall, their marriage is pretty good at the moment – they are trying to make time for dates and doing couple things – but this is one thing they just can't agree on and Wayne’s attitude really does wind Coleen up at times.”
