Coleen Rooney: ‘We can’t go on like this’

There’s no denying that Wayne and Coleen Rooney are going through one of the most difficult times so far in their 11-year marriage.

As well as living apart for the past few months – Wayne was finishing up the football season in America, while Coleen settled back in the UK with their four sons – they’ve also had to endure endless split reports, thanks to Wayne’s drunken misdemeanours with different women and Coleen’s high-profile fallout with fellow WAG Rebekah Vardy.

Coleen also recently missed a holiday to Barbados due to an infection, instead staying in the UK with youngest son Cass, while Wayne was with the eldest three and Coleen’s parents, Tony and Colette.

But we’re told Coleen didn’t join them as she was too annoyed with Wayne and wanted him to have a taste of what life is like as single parent. And this could be the beginning of Coleen thinking about a fresh start – one that could involve her leaving Wayne for good.

“Following the solo holiday with the kids and Coleen’s parents, Wayne came back to the UK to try to sort out things with her,” our insider says. “This is the first time Coleen’s ever gone this far [not going on holiday] and it has him worried. Plus, he got a taster of what his life would be like if they did separate, and needless to say it didn’t appeal to him."

"Coleen had told her parents to make sure Wayne did all the parenting, leaving him to manage the boys by himself, and it was a total shock to his system. But he seems to have got the message loud and clear.”

Now, Wayne has finished playing for DC United in Washington and moved back to the UK full-time, before starting his player-coach role at Derby County in January.

He and Coleen – who are also parents to Kai, nine, Klay, six, and Kit, three – are also set to move into their new £20million mega mansion soon, but the insider says she is not in the mood to repair their marriage at the moment.

“Wayne’s begging her to put the bad stuff behind them and to make a fresh start in the new house, but Coleen isn’t being so forgiving,” we’re told. “She’s had a rough few weeks, with all the backlash from the fallout with Rebekah – she’s fed up and feels like they’re living a lie at the moment.

"Her patience has worn out – she’s finally pushing back and telling Wayne she’s had enough of his empty promises, and him constantly apologising and swearing he’ll be better behaved, only for him to get into trouble again a few weeks later.

"She’s told him that words aren’t enough, and that she needs time to figure things out – yes, she has been thinking about a separation. She’s always thought before she wouldn’t be able to cope on her own, but now she’s realising just how miserable she is and that she can’t continue like this.”

The insider adds that Coleen, 33, also feels Rebekah – whose Instagram account Coleen claimed had leaked stories to a tabloid newspaper – is trying to wind her up by showing off how happy she is with her husband Jamie. While Wayne, 34, didn’t publicly support Coleen in the fallout, Jamie has been very supportive of his pregnant wife – who denies Coleen’s claims – and she has been making lots of loved-up posts on social media to show how strong they are.

As well as tweeting, “It’s…… Jamie Vardy,” when he scored a goal (in reference to Coleen’s post where she spoke of her five-month investigation about the leaks and ended it with, “It’s…… Rebekah Vardy’s account”), she posted a selfie of her and Jamie with the caption, “…Unbroken …Unbreakable.”

Our source says, “The Vardys being so OTT about how unbreakable they are isn’t helping things. But while Coleen would rather stick pins in her eyes than admit that Rebekah may have the upper hand, she’s finally admitting how miserable she is with Wayne.

“She’s not exactly feeling optimistic about their future and he’s really been given a dressing down from her. And, to his credit, he knows it’s all deserved."

Coleen has put up with a lot of bad behaviour from Wayne over the years, including him visiting prostitutes while she was pregnant, him being arrested as he drove party girl Laura Simpson home while drunk and, most recently, him being seen going into a lift with a woman following a raucous party where he stripped down to his boxers.

And our source says Coleen is trying to decide what she wants.

“They’re currently locked in this cycle of rows, making-up, more rows etc, and it’s exhausting,” we’re told. “Getting divorced is the last thing Coleen wants – she wants her boys to have a secure family – but she has to work out what’s best for all of them.

"She’s told Wayne she needs time to sort her head out, and that’s really worried him. He’s never seen her like this, so he’s making an effort – but, so far, it’s not making much difference.”
