Could this be Rita’s last Christmas on the cobbles?
Rita, who's been a Corrie fixture since 1972, trips over fairy lights while putting the finishing touches to her Christmas tree, leading her to fall to the floor and her heavy tree to fall on top of her.
Because Rita told her pals she was going away for the festive season, no-one thinks to check on her and she’s left there for days.
It’s only when a neighbour pops by that Rita, played by Barbara Knox) is found and set free.
After the accident, she tells her Weatherfield friends she “thought she was a goner”.
Soap bosses wanted the sad storyline to highlight how elderly people can suffer from loneliness over the Christmas period, not talking to anyone for days or even weeks.
But fans will be pleased that the second longest-serving character – after Ken Barlow – hasn’t seen her last days
