Ever since Brooklyn Beckham announced his engagement to girlfriend of nine months Nicola Peltz, his mum Victoria has barely been able to contain her joy.

The fashion designer has been gushing all over social media about how happy she is that her eldest son has settled down with American actress Nicola, the daughter of billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz.

Our insiders say she has been telling friends she’s excited about the forthcoming nuptials, which are due to take place next year, with two ceremonies – one in England and one in the US – costing around £4million. But while Posh is beside herself with excitement, the same can’t be said of husband David.

“David is obviously pleased Brooklyn has found someone he loves and wants to settle down with, but he’s worried that he might be rushing into things,” our source explains.

“He doesn’t want all the wedding planning and excitement turning into a circus or Brooklyn to feel under pressure. Victoria says Nicola is good for him, so he’s right to commit so he doesn’t lose her. But David is concerned that Brooklyn may be doing this for the wrong reasons – to please his mum, especially as his career still hasn’t really taken off.”

The source continues, “David and Victoria are clashing over this. He sees her getting all worked up, talking to Nicola about the dress and what the ceremonies will be like, and it has wound him up at times. There’s been a few rows, but Vic says she’s just happy for her son and is excited for him to get married.”

Brooklyn, 21, announced his engagement by posting a picture of him and Nicola, 25, on Instagram, saying, “Two weeks ago I asked my soulmate to marry me and she said yes. I am the luckiest man in the world. I promise to be the best husband and the best daddy one day. I love you baby.” Nicola was quick to put up the same picture – which was taken by Brooklyn’s nine-year-old sister Harper – followed by Victoria and her younger two sons, Romeo, 17, and Cruz, 15. David didn’t post until the following day, and our source says the former England football captain is worried that Brooklyn might be a bit immature for a big life decision like this – especially as he hasn’t really sorted out his career yet.

“David sees Brooklyn as just a kid and worries how impressionable he is. He’s been trying to offer fatherly advice, telling Brooklyn not to rush into a wedding,” we’re told. “When Brooklyn shoots back that David and Vic got married young and had a huge wedding, David has to remind him that they paid for it themselves with money they’d earned. For David, being a family man means being able to support them independently – and Brooklyn isn’t at that stage yet.”

The insider adds, “David’s also concerned about the effect on Brooklyn if this all goes wrong. This time last year, he was worried that Brooklyn was going off the rails and in danger of becoming a ‘celebrity brat’, so he’s pleased he’s found Nicola – but feels he’s gone too far the other way.”

The eldest Beckham child has often found himself under fire for an apparent lack of ambition. At 18, he went to New York to study photography, but dropped out after six months. Despite this, he released his own photography book and has shot campaigns for high-profile magazines and brands, with many claiming he only got these opportunities because of his famous parents.

Last year, Brooklyn was given a three-month internship with renowned photographer Rankin, but it’s unknown if he completed it. When he announced his engagement, many fans offered their congratulations, but a lot of online commenters were quick to criticise. “Brooklyn is so spoilt and immature, no way is he ready for marriage,” one said, while another wrote, “Bet the spoilt brat didn’t pay for the ring or will be paying anything towards the wedding.”

In fact, we’re told Brooklyn paid for Nicola’s beautiful diamond ring himself – rumoured to have cost £250,000 – from previous earnings, but the weddings will be paid for by their parents. Nicola’s dad Nelson is said to be worth over £1.3billion and, as one of only two daughters out of his ten children, he wants Nicola to have the best. We’re told she and Brooklyn are planning a huge multimillion-pound wedding in the US for next year, which will have a guest list of some of America’s richest and most powerful people, and Nicola’s been told that money is no object.

Our source says the Beckhams – who are reportedly worth £336million – are also keen to throw their son a big bash and are planning an elaborate second wedding at their Cotswolds estate.

“Victoria is so in awe of Nicola’s family and is so pleased Brooklyn is marrying into it,” our insider adds. “But she wants to show that they can compete, so she wants to pay for a big celebration in the UK, too. This has given her a new focus and she can’t wait to start planning everything – even if David isn’t as keen.”
