After the tragic deaths of Love Island contestants Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis in the space of just a year, bosses of the popular reality show have come under a great deal of backlash, with former Islander Jonny Mitchell even setting up a petition against them.

Whilst the likes of Dom Lever and Malin Andersson also slammed the show for its after care procedures, 2017 runner-up Olivia Attwood has given her support to the show, admitting Love Island 'saved her life'.

After the recent backlash, Olivia spoke to The Sun, saying, "People are angry and they want someone to blame. Mike was in turmoil and a lot of his problems weren’t to do with Love Island at all.

"It isn’t an aftercare situation but a before care. You need to be obligated to do a certain amount of therapy before going on Love Island to prepare you."

Olivia, who is now dating Blackburn Rovers footballer Bradley Dack, then added, "Love Island saved me. I got a lot of heat in the villa for the way I was but after I came out so many girls said how they related to me. I finally found this sense of self-acceptance that I never had before."

Dom Lever and Jess Shears (2017): STILL TOGETHER

Jess and Dom are so together, in fact, they got 'married' on Good Morning Britain on Valentine's Day 2017. The, um, actual wedding's scheduled for later this year.

Her comments come after the tragic news of Mike's death broke over the weekend. The reality star, who was due to appear on Ex On The Beach later this year, was found dead in woodland near his Essex home on Saturday 16th March.

A Met Police spokesperson said, "Police were called to a park near Latymer Way, N9 at 0928hrs on Saturday, 16 March to reports of a man found hanged.

"Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended and found a man, aged in his 20s deceased. "At this early stage, the death is not being treated as suspicious. Police are in the process of informing the man's next of kin. A file will be prepared for the coroner."

Meanwhile, following the tragic news, as well as Mike's Love Island co-stars paying tribute to him online, his friend and Islander Montana Brown appeared on This Morning on Monday 18th March, where she spoke about her last communication with Mike.

When she was asked how she found out the devastating news of Mike's death, Montana explained, "One of my friends texted me 'I don't know whether this is true, but Mike has taken his life.' I tried to call him and his phone went straight to answer phone."

Montana then revealed she had received a text message from Mike two days before his death, crying as she said, "I'm really kicking myself but he texted me and I didn't reply. When he was going through a really rough time I was checking up on him every day."
