The actor, who starred on the hit ITV soap from 2005-2018, left the soap last year, after he declined to extend his contract and instead retired from acting. It was also reported at the time that he felt his character's role in the show had come to an end after John Middleton (Vicar Ashley Thomas) left the soap.

With his final scenes airing in February 2018, fans of the show last saw Sandy flying to Australia to start a new life.

Since the news of his death was announced, tributes have poured in from Emmerdale co-stars, including Katherine Dow Blyton, who plays Harriet Finch. She tweeted, 'Will be raising a glass or two tonight to the wonderful Freddie Jones. So lucky to have worked with this legend. A very special man. R.I.P Freddie “If there’s another world, he lives in bliss; If there is none, he made the best of this”'.

Fans of the soap have also paid their respects, with one tweeting, 'Sad news about #FreddieJones passing such a charismatic and funny actor may he rest in peace'. whilst another added, 'Really sad news as Freddie Jones has passed away! He played Sandy Thomas with such warmth and humour #emmerdale'. [sic].
