If you’re a '90s kid, chances are Amanda Bynes was a staple on your TV growing up. The actress rose to fame just before the turn of the millennium as a child star on Nickelodeon’s All That before bagging her own series called The Amanda Show, where she hosted and starred in a series of sketches as iconic characters like Judge Trudy and Penelope Taynt.

The Amanda Show also starred teen faves Drake Bell and Josh Peck, who went on to star in another Nickelodeon classic Drake and Josh.

But it wasn't all smooth sailing as, like many young stars put under the limelight at an early age, Amanda suffered a breakdown in 2012, ending in multiple arrests and a well publicised feud with Lindsay Lohan.

Amanda Bynes conservatorship

Following her breakdown, Amanda was placed under a conservatorship in 2013. Like Britney Spears, this meant that her freedom was severely restricted and she's currently under the protection of the courts at the request of her mum, Lynn Bynes, who is her legal guardian.

However, unlike Britney, Amanda has received nowhere near the level of public outcry and in September 2021 it was confirmed that her conservatorship would be extended for another two years.

Speaking to US Weekly at the time, her lawyer said, "Everyone would love to see Amanda not under a conservatorship. I think that is the goal between myself, her mother, her father and her care providers.

"Amanda would love to be unconserved [sic]. She’s expressed it over and over. The timing is not right at the moment, so she’s working toward that direction. We all are working toward that direction, and one day we all hope to see it."

It was after an incident in 2013 where Amanda was detained in police custody for starting a fire that her parents, Lynn and Rick first filed for a conservatorship.

After making her movie debut at 16 in Big Fat Liar, Amanda became the queen of teen comedies with (Oscar-worthy, if you ask us) performances in What A Girl Wants, She's The Man (alongside a pre-Magic Mike Channing Tatum), Hairspray and Easy A.

But Easy A would turn out to be her last acting role to date as she announced she would be taking an indefinite hiatus from acting shortly after.

"Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem," she tweeted at the time.

"If I don’t love something anymore, I stop doing it. I don’t love acting anymore, so I’ve stopped doing it. I know 24 is a young age to retire, but you heard it here first."

There, she falls in love with school hottie Duke (played by Channing Tatum and let's be honest, who WOULDN'T fall in love with Channing Tatum?).

The tweet was later deleted and the former child star issued an apology a year later (sort of) when she tweeted, "By the way I just want to tweet that Zac Efron is not ugly."
